Cassandra's Story

In 1957, in the dead of winter, my family moved from Bloomfield, NJ, to Bristol, CT. I was twelve years old. I was ecstatic, because snow covered the ground all winter, and frozen ponds for ice skating were plentiful. (In case you are wondering, winter is no longer my favorite season.) Connecticut was a wonderful place in which to grow up. It was warm, safe, and friendly, not to mention the physical beauty. I graduated from Bristol Eastern High School in 1963, and from Beaver College in Glenside, PA, in 1967. I earned a Master's degree in educational psychology from Temple University, and eventually another Master's in church history from Wheaton College in Illinois. In 1973, at a church in Philadelphia, I met my wonderful husband of 35 years, Mark Niemczyk, who had just completed his Ph D in organic chemistry at Columbia University. We moved to Grinnell, Iowa, where Mark taught chemistry for a year, and then on to Wheaton College, where he has taught ever since (and where I earned that second M...Expand for more
aster's degree). We are anticipating our retirement in a few years, probably to Connecticut. We have two grown children of whom we are very proud. Our daughter Elizabeth lives in the Boston area. She is a wife and mother, and she is expecting her second child in June. Our grandson Walton is six years old, and he is very smart, he knows how to play chess. Elizabeth has a degree from NYU in costume design. She has worked with the designer, Susan Hilferty, on "Into the Woods", among other free lance assignments, including the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. Our son Ben lives in New York City. He is a musician and a photographer. He is the musical director of the Westchester Oratorio Society. Ben has sung in ensembles at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Radio City Music Hall. As I look back on my life, I am keenly aware of how much I have been blessed. Truly, the lines have fallen for me in pleasant places--well, to be honest, not the Midwest. I will always be a Connecticut Yankee, end of story.
