Cathy's Story
Life
I was married in 1966 to David Lee Lilly, class of 1963. We had a daughter (Tamara Leigh) in 1967. He was killed on the Beckley Police force in 1975. I later moved to Florida to start my life over someplace else. I subsequently got remarried (and divorced after 10 years)
My daughter got into raising horses, (Paso Finos) and she learned to become quite a good horsewoman / trainer. She also is a Vet technician. She is now married and has her own farm raising race horses and taking care of injured ones.
I spent 10 years in night school getting my BS degree in Medical Technology, while working full time at the VA. I will be retireing this year with 32 years of civil service and as the Blood Bank / Hematology Supervisor at the Miami VA Medical center. After I retire I would like to continue as a American Association of Blood Banks inspector and do volunteer work with an outreach program teaching dancing to under priviledged children.
Workplace
My career with the Veteran's administration was a go...Expand for more
od one. The VA trained me initially, I went back to school (over 10 years until I obtained my degree) and progressively worked my way through the ranks until I was in charge of the Transfusion Hematology Service Department(s). This was VERY challenging since the hospital is a teaching facility and there was ongoing training of Resident Doctors to instruct with the aspects of Diagnosis, transfusion therapy and outcomes. The challenge of resolution of incompatible blood due to a mirade of antibody problems was hectic, especially when the patient was profusely bleeding..especially when I had to resolve them over the phone in the middle of the night for technologists working on off shifts. My career expanded to teaching Immunohematology in college, doing panel forums and continuing education seminars, and performing accreditation inspections of other facilities in the southeast region and Quality Management reviews.
I am glad to be retired from a long tenuous career that has been rewarding and well done!
