Charlene (Cookie) 's Story

Actually, I'm still trying to get used to widowhood! Since my dear husband passed, I've moved back to Maryland (Beltsville, this time) after 46 years in DC. That's where my Jimmy and I raised our daughter and son, and proudly watched them make their own successful adult lives. Val's a university professor of religion and Jay's a research biologist. But just imagine - I just couldn't get either of them to major - or even to MINOR - in music, although both are very musical folks now! Both sing and play instruments very well. I really did TRY to teach my jazz-loving husband to play the flute and alto saxophone. HarrrrUMPH! His preference was LISTENING! Of course, these days, I'm retired as a public school educator, but (quite curiously!!!), I'm still very busy as a church organist, choir and orchestra director, an instrumental and choral performer, and a published composer. I still have a bunch of compositions that I've GOT to go ahead and get published - as soon as I can get myself organized!!! When I retired, it was as a counselor, working with older teens/young adults and their families - often very emotionally-draining work! In my retirement, I worked for five years as the Music Director for an opera company in Baltimore, and also taught music theory at two high schools in DC - part-time, of course. I'm also at Howard University's School of Divinity, and in interfaith work as a musician. I really enjoy league bowling these days, and pay good money to knock down lots of ten-pins twice a week. I'm biking less than I used to, but I do enjoy that, too. I taught music and computing to other educators during summer sessions in 'the olden days', and I admit to spending LOTS of time at my home computer these days - mostly just checking out our genealogy and playing card games. I'm still a contract bridge and pinochle fanatic, and do get a kick out of stuff like computer freecell and those silly PacMan-type games. At least, my FINGERS get lots of exercise! After Oberlin (from 1955-1959, in Instrumental Music, of course), I came back to Baltimore and taught second...Expand for more
ary school band and orchestra music. In 1960, I married that cute, fresh teacher that I had met on my very first day as a new teacher in September, 1959! We then bought a home in the nation's capitol. That was HIS choice, 'cause I really loved Baltimore in those days! He'd taught Social Studies, but was working on a law degree part-time. Both of our children (one of each) were born during the 1960's, but somehow, Jimmy and I both managed to go to grad school in our 'spare time'! He went on to become a school counselor, and then, an attorney, with a good private practice. Meanwhile, I picked up master's degrees in Music and in Counseling, and a doctorate in Counseling Psychology. I still love school! Can you imagine? I've even dabbled in law courses and studied the Fortran computer language! During most of the '70's, '80's and '90's, at least two of the Moore-Coopers were paying college tuition or using up lots of scholarship or fellowship money somewhere in the world! Now - it's YOUR turn . . . What are YOU doing now - and where are you doing it?!?!? If you THINK that you remember me, or even any one of my three sisters and five brothers, WRITE!!! I'm very interested in staying in touch with old friends from my younger days in B'moretown and elsewhere! I'm the eldest of 9 (yes, NINE!)siblings. They are: Maurice, a retired United Methodist pastor and model railroad fanatic; Bradford, a retired high school teacher and inventor; Charles, a college math professor-turned-college administrator; Sara, a very organized government administrator; David, a secondary school teacher and administrator, and a liturgical musician like me; Ann, an elementary school teacher and computer nut; Alverta, a professional journalist and amateur photographer; and Samuel, a municipal environmental supervisor. Charles, Sara, David, Ann and Samuel stay involved with church choirs and other music groups in the Baltimore and Washington, DC area - as do I. If you know one or more of my siblings, then I've also probably met YOU! I'm Charlene - or 'Cookie' - your preference! WRITE!!!
