Charles (Chuck)'s Story
Charles (Chuck)Johnson is a 1971 graduate of Northern High and a distinguished sports writer who worked 20 years for USA TODAY. He currently is Sports Information Director for Detroit Public Schools and a contributing boxing columnist for HBO.com.
He is a Hall of Fame-voting member of the Baseball Writers' Association of America and the Boxing Writers Association of America. Spanning nearly four decades as a sports journalist, Johnson has also covered the National Football League and National Basketball Association. Johnson is a Detroit native and a 1975 graduate of Michigan State University. In recognition of his writing four years for Michigan State's campus newspaper and his illustrious career since, Johnson was inducted into the The State News Hall of Fame in April 2008.

r the eight-paper chain of Michigan dailies, reporting on the 1981 Thomas Hearns-Sugar Ray Leonard welterweight showdown in Las Vegas among other big fights during Detroit's renaissance as a boxing hotbed in the 80s.
Johnson is the founding chapter president of the former Mid-Michigan Association of Black Journalists and is a long-time active member of the National Association of Black Journalists. His body of work after 25 years earned him recognition as the 2000 Sports Journalist of the Year by the NABJ Sports Task Force. Johnson made his movie debut in 2006, portraying himself as a boxing writer in "Rocky Balboa." He is a product of Detroit's north end, with seven siblings who also graduated from Northern. In high school, Johnson got his start as a journalist as editor-in-chief of the Northern Light. He later worked as a public relations summer intern, writing for Michigan Bell's employee newspaper, Tie Lines, while attending college. He is divorced and the father of two children, daughter Janay and son Julius.
