(Charles) Ben's Story
Hi, thanks for dropping by--I truly hope you're keeping well in these difficult times. On top of everything else, many of my dear friends from York Memo are feeling the loss of our old high school in a devastating fire. I'll truly miss those very special haunts where I met so many people who changed my life. But the memories are still there: indelible, unerasable--a very special place in the heart.
My life hadn't changed for quite awhile, but like you, the Covid crisis has changed everything. Some major changes in my ministry situation led me to realize that it was time to retire from the organization that I've worked with for the past 14 years. I no longer serve as a Messianic rabbi and will miss my many friends in the congregation that we founded in 2009. I am now slowly letting go after years of persistent weekly deadlines. (I'll still work with other national and international organizations.) I have spent the past year in a doctoral program at McMaster Divinity College.
As I write these words, my heart goes out to you. We probably wouldn't recognize each other in a crowd these days--my beard is pretty white and whatever's left on top is getting th...Expand for more
in. But I do hope that you and those you love are able to cope through these times..
Each of us has overcome some tremendous challenges along the way. I hope a day will come when we're regathering again, sharing some of those well worn memories and a few hard-earned lessons together.
I owe a great deal to my wife, Sue, who was raised in Manhattan and is now a proud Canadian. She's an alumnus of Hunter High School (a prestigious young women's school when she attended) and was a much smarter student than me. Sue's now retired from her work as a mediator for the Ontario government. Our son, Jon, graduated from the Seneca drama program and has done extra work in movies. He's 6'2", kind and reflective.
Recently, I found someone online that isn't on this site. The person is distinguished in a unique field and distant geographically--they might be surprised to know that I admired them from afar. It made me wonder about why I keep coming back here. And then I thought--I'm so glad I'm not remembering all these things alone. That's the message I wanted to leave with you. Thank you, for helping all of us to remember together.
Warmly, and with all my best,
Ben
