Charles M. (Marty)'s Story

Retired, US Air Force, Master Sergeant (MSgt/E7), 22 years, 6 months, 4 days active military servce. Honorably discharged June 30, 1991. Retirement is NOT what it's cracked up to be!!!!!!! ~ Life ~ July 1st 1991.... Back into civilian life! Memberships: Just some of the more important ones. I have been on the forefront of many battles and door steps in our Nation's Capital; involved at our lowest forms of government, and attended conventions where Veterans and other lobby groups go to fight to support what rights and benefits we still share. But more importantly, to regain rights, benefits and funding lost to the greed of some and lack-of-knowledge of others, serving in our American Congresses and Houses of Representatives, for these, our US American Veterans. Every day members of these great organizations meet with legislators at all levels and in all branches of US Government; fighting to preserve and get back, for our active duty and retired forces, benefits lost because Congress continually backdoors Bills, hides ver...Expand for more
bage in other nonrelated bills and funding used for veterans health care. Our Sentinels are vigil and work for peanuts and are doing a great job. But if one bill sneaks through and becomes law.... then, it becomes more difficult to repel that law to get back what we just lost. We try to provide continual education to our newest and youngest, and yes, even some seasoned members of our congress; where nothing is safe or sacred in our Legislative Branches; except, their pay raises. Veterans' Funding (and Military funding too), are ALWAYS on the "chopping block". Our injured and disabled veterans rolls are increasing by the thousands daily. On the other hand, we are losing approximately 15,000 veterans a day! Even at that, our VA funding is still crucially attcked and lacking to provide adequate health care for our returning war veterans today. Don't forget about our Red Star, Blue Star and Gold Star Mothers and families out there needing our assistance. After all, their children provided the ultimate sacrifice for our Country. This devastation is not limited, in scope, to just the vets themselves. I pray everyday for the pain endured by all. Ok Baby Boomers.... Here's one for ya if ya didn't serve in the military - Social Security benefits. Actually applies to all of us in some form or fashion. Between diminished funding, health care and the rise in the retirement age, some of you may never receive social security. So GET OUT and support those non-profit groups (or group) that is lobbying on Capital Hill and in your own community, to preserve it. Some of us already receive Social Security (SSD) as a result of service-connected disabilities. If you aren't familiar with it, find yourself a disabled veteran and talk to him or her to see how they live or visit a VA Medical Center (VAMC). At the very least, drive by a VAMC and stop to read the little sign posted at the front gate of each facility. HINT: "Freedom Is Not Free!" Well folks... no spell check!! bbfn
