Charles's Story

Life Hey all where should I began well after playing football and runnning track and graduating from Plantation high in 86. I joined the most Elite Force in the World. The Few The Proud The Marines serving 12 years and doing many different tours in different countries and states. During my tour of the Marine Corps I was inspired by many influential Marines such as Gunnery Sgt Mayfield and Sgt Major Kokensparger. I spent 3 months in Marine Corps Boot Camp Parris Island South Carolina getting drilled and whipped into shape both mentally and physically by the best the Corps had to offer, One of my Drill Instructors grandfather fought in the Chosen Resevoir War in Korea. I remember when we were going through ITC (Infantry Training Course) deep in the back woods of Parris Island,SC He would tell us stories about his grandfather fighting in Korea, He would always remind us that the sand fleas were there to instill discipline in us. Which is something you would need when you are fighting in harsh combat conditions, But every now and then he would allow us the opportunity to slap the sand fleas away from us. And let me tell you i think those damn sand fleas were immune to that skin so soft- with alcohol because it didn't always work. After graduating from boot camp I went on to Camp Geiger, NC to Infantry Training School, after graduation went to my 1st Unit in Camp Lejeune 2nd Marine Division Charlie Co 1/6 as a rifleman (0311) and machine gunner both heavy and light (0331/ 0332) While serving with 6th Marine Regiment I had the proud honor of wearing the distinguished French Fouragee a Green and Gold braided rope that we wore with our full Alpha uniform the 5th and 6th Marines were the only ones who wore it. I got married in december of 87 which was way too soon especially since I had just graduated from high school one year ago. However we live and we learn and boy was it a eye opening learning experience. My first tour overseas was with Cold Steel Charlie Co. 1/6 to the Phillipines, Hong Kong and Okinawa Japan. As a PFC fresh out of Infantry Training School My 2nd tour in Okinawa Japan was with Lightning Lima Co 3/6 at Camp Schwab humping up and down Jungle trails getting bit up by mosquitos and keeping an eye out for the venomous Habu snake, I served 4 tours in Panama with Charlie Co 1/6 Cold Steele Charlie, conducting Jungle Patrols looking for Noriegas Macho Demonte soldiers and protecting the fuel tanks. In 1990 after returning from Okinawa Japan Lima Co did a few more operations. On a cold December morning in 1990 during a division parade. The Commandant of the Marine Corps General Al Grey came up from Headquarters Marine Corps,to speak to us. He stated during his speech about Marine Corps history and all the many Wars the Marines have fought in from the battle of the Chosen Resevoir to Beirut Lebanon and his famous last words were. "You will go where your Commandant tells you to Go" within 6 hours later my unit Lima Co. 3/6 was called to duty. For Operation Desert Shield / Operation Desert Storm Gulf War, Before the end of the day we were on our way to the Armory getting weapons and loading the 5 tons with supplies and heavy weapons that we couldn't carry on the bus. By the time 20:00(8pm) had rolled around we were loading the buses and on our way to Cherry Point NC. to load up and fly out on a Boieng 747 Airline Jet with the two decks. That cold december night when were loading the plane made me think about a song we use to sing when we were on a long hump "Mama, Mama Can't You see what the Corps has done to me, Put me on a Silver Jet the air was cold the ground was wet" My unit returned back from the Desert Storm War in 1991. When we were sitting on the border getting ready to cross over into Iraq thats when they called the cease fire. Many of us in my unit had said if we were not permitted to continue the mission, We would not only find ourselves back but our children and possibly their children. And here we are some 18 years later still after the fact because we were not permitted to finish the job. I still have some very close friends that have done about 4 or more tours since we were there in 1990. This war is much more destructive due to the loss of many, many Service members. Being in the war was quite an experience I spent my 24th birthday in a machine gun pit with my gunner and A-gunner. it definitely wasn't what I had planned! Although my squad-leader Santini and my machine gunner Todd did give me a chocolate nut cake from a MRE it was a nice gesture, however there were no ballons. Everyday was a challenge just waking up due to the fact we didn't know what we were going to face. The very first day we loaded up on the 5 tons we had to go into Mopp level 4 because of all the things we heard about with Saddam and his infamous cousin Chemical Ali. For those of you who have not been in the military Mopp stands for (Mission Oriented Protective Posture)And believe me when i say it's uncomfortable it is especially when you have know idea as to how long you are going to be wearing that charcoal suit. At the same time your'e greatful for having it no matter how it felt having it on because you knew that it was going to save your life when push came to shove!!! I got divorced after returning from the Gulf war in 91. In 1992 I received orders to Go to Quantico Virginia where. I served as a Enlisted Instructor at TBS (The Basic School) E.I. Company My job entailed training student lieutenants on light and heavy machine guns for tactical offensive and defensive operations. Being a enlisted instructor was an experience I will never forget due to the fact you really had to know your stuff when you got in front of the class, I enjoyed it very much we taught indoor and outdoor classes. While being sationed in Quantico I got to experince two blizzards, now that was something especially since I was raised in Ft,Lauderdale. The first one I experienced I got stuck out in town at a girlfriends house for 3 days due to the fact they had shut the base down,I was glad that she had gone to the grocery store 2 days earlier. I received a Honorable Discharge leaving the Marine Corps as a Sgt, in 1997 I came back home and resided in Coral Springs for awhile. Did armed security for 10 years and attended some college at BCC,At the moment. I'm now continuing my education at Florida Metropolitan University, I started in November 06 which is now called Everest University. I'm majoring in Criminal Justice due to graduate in April of 09 or sooner due to the fact I'm now taking online courses instead of on campus. My goal now is to be a part of another elite force law-enforcement. Well I just completed another chapter in my life I just graduated from the Olustee Corrections Academy in Lake City Florida. Going through the corrections academy was a great experience I even found myself reverting back to the ways of the Corps especially during inspections, You know the spitshine boots and pressed out uniforms. I was made the DI for my class and kept the position till we graduated. on August 25th 2008 I graduated from the academy it was a long 5 months of a lot of PT and exams not to mention going through the gas chamber with no mask and getting sprayed with OC. I have to say that Nina was truly supportive of me while I was going through the academy especially when I was waking up at 0330 in the morning just to make sure I got to the academy on time, We had to be there exactly ...Expand for more
at 0600 I drove 96 miles one way for 5 months to Lake City, Fl to the Olustee Correctional Academy. Which is about 60 miles from Valdosta Ga.And every morning that I got up Nina was right there with me,and sometimes if she wasn't too sleepy she would even fix lunch for me, and before. I would leave to go out the garage door she always gave me a kiss and said drive careful, this Nina always said for a good reason which I will tell you about later. Despite the fact Nina would be getting up around 0600 or 0630 to get ready for work herself. I tell you not too many people would do this, However, theres really nothing that we wouldn't do for each other. February, 26 2008 5 car accident on I-75 Before I became a Correction Officer I had just gotten a security job with Lockheed Martin at the Missle Fire Control Plant in Orlando,I was very excited about this job I had to go through an extensive background check in order to get my 1st level of security clearance. On the night of February 26 I had just left the house somewhere between 2030 and 2045 to go to work my shift was from 2300-0700, I was 30 minutes away from my job. When I was hit from behind my truck slammed into the guardrail and bounced off it twice and after spinning around several times in the middle of I-75, My truck came to a complete stop, I could see sparks of fire coming from the truck, and I thought for sure this was the end for me. Believe me it's very true what it says about your whole life passes in front of your eyes when you think that it's the end. As I sat there in the middle of I-75 dazed, I was able to finally free my self from the seatbelt and get out of the truck. And I heard a voice asking me was I alright or was I hurt. I was transported to Leesburg Medical Center and I spent the next 2 1/2- 3 days in ICU. I was glad that Nina was there for me every single day and she contacted the rest of my family to let them know what happened and would keep them posted on updates. On the day that I was released from the hospital, Nina came to pick me up and on the way home we stopped by the rest stop where they had towed my truck, so that I could retrieve my belongings. This is when I realized how close to death I came the driver side tire was completely off its axle. My air bags never deployed from the impact which is a blessing in disguise because if they had deployed I would have probably ended up on the North bound side of I-75 into oncoming traffic! So I guess that God isn't through with me yet because he brought me through the accident. I became a State Certified Correction Officer for the State Of Florida on September, 03 2008. My job as a Correction Officer is very challenging due to the fact that I deal with (Youthful Offenders) ages 19-24 these young men are totally different from when we were that age. The prison that I work at houses many gang members, Most of these gangs originated from California, Chicago, Mexico and yeah even here in the Sunshine State. How many of you remember the movie colors with Ice- T. Being a correction officer is exciting as well as dangerous, and you always have to watch your 6.The Pods that I work has two tiers, Inmates will always try you just to see if your mind and physical attributes are strong. My Marine Corps background always comes in handy especially when it's time to get them up in the mornings they can,t stand it when I come in the mornings, because my voice is so loud. They always say C/O McNeal you need to go back to the Army and I always correct them and say thats Marines, many of them ask me would the Marines take felons since we are at War. I always tell them you would have to get in touch with a Marine recruiter through your family, I'm hoping that I will be able to make a difference and change some of their lives for better. The next goal I'm hoping to accomplish is to become dual certified as a Law Enforcement Officer, Since moving to here to Ocala with my fiance' Nina it's been a long hard road getting to this point. One day soon I hope to take a trip to Finland because thats where Nina is from. I have been trying to learn how to speak Finnish its a pretty hard language I do however know some words and meanings at least all the ones that count when we are speaking to each other. However, I'm truly greatful and Blessed to finally have someone in my life that has stood by my side through the thick and thin of all the things that has happened in my life since leaving Broward County. We have been Blessed with a beautiful home here in Ocala Fla, it took some getting used to, however, we have adjusted pretty well especially since we were both use to a larger County like Broward. May 21, 2010 Nina and I got married it was small wedding with some family members and friends, Since Nina's family resides in Finland, However, we do plan on having a larger scale wedding sometime in the near future so that all family members from Finland will be able to attend. June 30, 2010 Nina and I were Blessed with a Beautiful baby girl her name is Nora we chose a name that could be pronounced in English as well as Finnish, Her nickname is (Lil Doll) because she's looks like a lil baby doll. If I won $100 million, I'd give 15% tithes to a church of my choice because. I know that it will come back to me 10x as much, some of it to charities and pay off all of our bills. Have the wedding and honeymoon that i never got to have from my 1st marriage and by Nina a wedding ring that I know she would always cherish. Although she always reminds me that being rich isn't important to her as long as we have each other and enough to pay our bills every month and can put some away for our enjoyment, Thats all she needs. I would spend the rest on my family, start my own Armed Security Company with my closest friends from the Marine Corps and send my mom on a vacation she always wanted. I'm now Divorced since May 2o15. I have 4 kid's Lamar my oldest Son is in the Navy now Stationed in Bremerton Washington, My other Son and Daughter Jamal 17 and Aliyah 15 both attend Plantation High. My youngest daughter Nora 12 resides with her Mom in Ocala. I spent 11.5 years with Sumter County Sheriff's Office as a Detention Deputy in the jail. I recently relocated to Pinellas County and got hired August of 2020 as a Deputy in the jail. I would have to day it was the best move I could have made for myself. I was Blessed to get hired on in spite of what we all were and still experiencing with Covid. I have about 6.5 or 7 years left before I retire. I've been in this field since 2008. I've come through a lot of challenges including fighting an inmate who was carrying razors on his person. Unbeknownst to me. During the fight O tore my right rotator cuff had to have surgery was out of commission for about a yr and half workmans comp due to surgery and physical therapy 2x. I've seen a lot in this profession along with everything I experienced as a United States Marine, but I would change a thing about my life except a few things when it came to both of Marriages and Divorces. I have been my Mom's caretaker for the last 8.5 years she resided with me since 2013. I noticed that quite a few of my classmates ventured to this side of Florida. I haven't had an opportunity to attend any of the class reunions because I didn't want to go alone, but now I'm beyond that and do hope to attend one in the near Future if I'm not working or Hustling and Grinding OT. I will add more photo's soon.
