Charles's Story

Life I am an "Air Force brat," so I attended ten schools before graduating from Mt Pleasant HS in Delaware in 1965. These moves account for my various HS communities, since I signed on to them to see who I would have graduated with. I also attended two colleges (UVa and the USAFA) and two seminaries, so there are a few more communities -- plus I had friends in other schools, so there are some others... My HS yearbook mentions my desire to be an Air Force officer after attending the Air Force Academy. I did get an appointment to the Academy in the spring of my first year at Virginia, and I attended one semester - and discovered that I was not as military as I thought. At times I wish I had stayed, and that I had become a pilot, but I have been happy with how things have turned out. I got my bachelor's degree from Virginia and attended a semester and a half of graduate psychology before deciding I was cut out for something else. I then worked for the State Health Dept in Va for four years, and I volunteered with the Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship at Madison College (now JMU). In 1974 I decided to go to seminary, and went to Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Mass. There I met Mary and we were married in 1975. After GCTS, I worked with IVCF in eastern Mass, and then went to Virginia to seek ordination in the Episcopal Church. I was ordained in the Episcopal Church in 1982. I have served parishes in Rome NY, rural SC, Gladstone NJ, and Whitinsville MA. I have been in MA since 1991. We have two children, Andrew and Elizabeth. I have made two trips abroad for ministry, to Costa Rica in 1988 and to Uganda in 1994. We love to camp and sail. I have fond memories of of all the schools I attended, and I remember some friends at all of them, although unfortunately not everyone I met. My best wishes to all! I have retired in the fall of 2009. It has been a good change from being a full-time pastor. I have done some non-ch...Expand for more
urch part-time work and I preach and lead worship from time to time for congregations that do not have a regular pastor. I am hoping to get some longer-term positions, such as an interim pastor, and I am in training to become a spiritual director, helping people to see God at work in their lives and to hear his voice. In late 2013, I had completed my training and was appointed by my bishop, along with two other "seasoned" clergy, to be his Bishop's Chaplain for Clergy Care and Wellness. It is wonderful to have a pastoral ministry among my colleagues and to support those who are engaged in evangelism and congregational ministry in prayer. Andrew was married to Julie in 2007 and Elizabeth to Allen in 2010. They each have a little girl - both were born in 2012. Andrew's Fiona was born in March and Elizabeth's Rachel was born in July, four months later to the day. They are utterly delightful children. Andrew lives about an hour away in MA, but Elizabeth is six hours away in Lititz, PA - a beautiful area, but we can't get down too often, alas. I do not know how many Mt Pleasant people remember the railroad overpasses that were painted green and white with "Go Knights" and other school slogans on them - but I was one of the members of "The Green Hornet" who did some midnight painting - elegant vandalism, I call it now! I have many fond memories of my days as an MPHS student - and sometimes wonder when I had time to study. Since I last updated this, we have had a new granddaughter born - Lorelai Catherine Sutton arrived on May 5. She is now five months old and flourishing. (today is 7 Oct) There are now a total of seven grandchildren. Andrew and Julie have Fiona (2012), Lorelai (2015), and Oliver (2018), while Elizabeth and Allen have Rachel (2012), Anna (2016), Charles (2018), and Charlotte (2020). Allen and Elizabeth bought a farm in Bradford County, PA, on the New York line and have become produce farmers - lots of work!

Today is my mother's 100th birthday. We would have had a wonderful celebration had she lived to this day, but she departed this life to join the throngs of saints who rejoice to be in the presence of Jesus a week after she
