Charlie's Story
Life
Home Life: Lawry (B. Jones, Wellesley College '83, HBS '88) and I have been married since 1988 and live in Pacific Palisades, CA. We have two boys: Barrett, 17 and Evan age 15. Both boys attend Harvard-Westlake, a college prepatory school in Los Angeles. Barrett is the class of 2010 and Evan is the class of 2012. We'll see if they both make it. For the most part our schedule and lives revolve around theirs. They both play sports for school teams and outside clubs all year (yes, I started a lacrosse youth league in 2000 and they both are playing!) round and at times are playing two to three sports during the same season; so we do a lot of car pooling and a lot of watching.
Both boys are involved in a local repertory theater and have had several parts in musicals including ÂKiss Me KateÂ, ÂHow to Succeed in BusinessÂ, ÂAnnie Get your GunÂ, ÂLittle Shop of Horrors and ÂInto the Woods so I get to play a number of different roles when we go over their lines and they make sure to never let me sing.
Lawry serves as vice-chair of the St. Matthews School Board and recently finished a $15 million new school construction project. SheÂis a lay Eucharist minister and provides home Eucharist to indigent members of the church. I recently finished a three year term on the Vestry of St. Matthews where I was the Jr. Warden and sat on several committees, I also sit on the Board of Directors of Good Sam Hospital; the BSA Troop 223; the Pacific Palisades Baseball Association; Pacific Palisades Community Council, and the Los Angeles Lacrosse League.
What we do for fun:
We just completed an extensive house remodel so we are trying to do more things around home including hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains, biking, playing paddle tennis, tennis, golf and boogey boarding at the beach.
We will continue to travel with the boys (something I did not have the opportunity to do with my family growing up). We have visted the Serengeti in Africa, Equador, The Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica, Western Europe, and Egypt. We have visited every state in the Union including Alaska...Expand for more

Aside from my entrepreneurial busienss career, my one notable personal accomplishment is that I helped start the first youth lacrosse league in LA.
When I first moved to Los Angeles, I could not believe there was not any opportunity for kids to learn to play lacrosse in a league that was open to anyone. So, after selling my partnership in Soundelux in 1999, I combined my personal passion for lacrosse and my entrepreneurial skills to start the first youth lacrosse league in Los Angeles with good friend Jake Steinfeld. The effort has now grown to over 500, 7-14 year middle school aged players and 44 high schools currently competing in the Southern Section of California under CIF rules.
Professional Life:
Mine has been a more diverse route. From Brown to Macy's to Bankers Trust Co. to Wall St. and Bond Trading, to California and my graduate school of business degree at USC to the entertainment industry, to applied digital technologies and transforming the post film industry, to selling my partnership in a post-production sound company (we did the post on Braveheart which won an academy award for best sound) and then a failed .com and a failed business service center at LAX airport prior to 9/11 and a couple other start ups in between.
In 1991, Lawry started a family partnership in a real estate, developing commercial properties on the west side of Los Angeles, which she is president and I am a very, very silent partner.
Currently, I am currently the Executive Director of the Institute for Critical Information Infrastructure Protection at the Marshall School of Business, USC, a non profit institute on cyber security. ICIIP is a public/private partnership whose mission it is to help close the gap between the current cyber security risk profile and where we need to go as a country to protect our nationÂs information infrastructure. We do research (we've done work for government agencies including the Department for Homeland Security), conduct executive education courses and develop best practices around the business of cyber security and information protection.
