Cheryl's Story
2/26/09
This year has brought new challenges and last few months have been busy but productive. The gardening project is going even better than expected. We've been reading about the soil food web, (amazing!) how to support it, compost, worm bins - I'm staring at pictures of rotting garbage and worms and saying things like "Oooo" and "Cool!" My youngest son thinks I've gone completely 'round the bend. He might be right. We scored a 400 sq ft garden plot at a nearby community garden and I am anxious to get started on sprouting some seeds and digging in the dirt. The "garden room" in back is undergoing an experimental attempt at growing some grass so we can have a VERY little lawn to enjoy and soon we'll be setting out the new forsythias. The potted apple tree and the blueberries have weathered the winter (so far- knock on wood) but neither rosemary survived the cold. I jumped the gun and planted some carrot seeds left over from last year a couple of weeks ago - what the heck?
The potted garden and the community garden should have been enough digging in the dirt for anyone but then my husband had yet another moment of madness (hey, he married me didn't he?)and committed ...Expand for more
to a joint salsa garden venture in a nearby friend's garden plot. We are going to be very busy. Well, he is, anyway.
Here's to the wormies!
Stay warm, be well.

Fall is my favorite season, the autumn air just washes over my skin; so refreshing and so sensual in just the way Walt Whitman meant the word to convey.
Our garden has been taken down for this season but I am already planning a much more ambitious endeavor for next Spring with plans for year-round gardening in mind. Might as well take advantage of this maritime climate in which I am so fortunate to live. The youngest is back in a brick and mortar school and now I have time to knock around making big plans for my husband to carry out on my behalf. muwahahaha. Hope all is well for my old schoolmates - wherever you are and whoever you've become.
What a delightful summer so far! We've spent plenty of evenings roasting marshmallows in garden after enjoying walks and swims in the pool. The granddaughter has been to visit and we look forward to more as the summer progresses. Can't wait for the Brewfest the Friday - it's becoming something of an annual event for my husband and I - I love being an Oregonian.
