Cheryl's Story
I taught school (Middle School Science) for 30 years, (Jacksonville, Fl)I retired in 2003. I bought a Hot Dog cart (see photo) and I sell hotdogs in Gainesville at the University of Florida football games. Florida and Tennessee are great rivals. I really enjoy the Tennesse game, but I havea hard time deciding wether to cheer for Florida or Tennesse.
After retiring I decided to try the health care field. I was a caregiver for a gentleman who had ALS,(Lou Gerigs disease) so you can see I stay fairly busy. ALS is such a debilitating disease. It takes away all your dignity. Your body just waste away, but your mind is sharp as a tack. I don't know what's the worst, losing your mind or loosing your body.
The person I was a caregiver for past away the first week in April. It was very hard on me. He was such a compassionate caring person. A wise old soul. Waldo accomplished a lot in his lifetime. He was a physicist, very intellient. He owned his own business, which was very successful. He traveled the world. I learned alot from him. I'm not sure I want to care for someone who is dying, you get too attached.
I guess it's time toadd another chapter to my life.I'll will just wait and see what the Good Lord has in store for me.
After teaching school for 30 years and retiring, I was lost for awhile. I knew I wasn't meant to stay at home. It's not in my blood to sit around and do nothing.I like to stay busy, keeps you healthy and young at heart.
I always wanted a Hot Dog art, so thats when I got the Idea to sell at the Gator games. I really enjoy the college atomsphere and the college students are great.
The one thing I do miss being retired is the interaction I had wi...Expand for more
th my students. I think of them often and I do hope I made a difference in their lifes. One of my students came back to visit me the year I retired and said: "You can't retire you have to teach my children". I ask him how old his chlren were, he said they weren't born yet. I said well I know I want be here that long. He said, "whatever you do you must work with children or peolpe, you are a people person". That made me feel very good. I know the next chapter in my life will involve caring or teaching individuals.
New chapter in my Life. I've decided to sell my Hot Dog bussiness. I will miss all the great people including the students I have met and come to love. I have gotten too old to do all the heavy lifting coolers, meat, ice etc. I will surely miss the atmosphere and the nice people I have come to know. If I could find some one to set up the business and take it down. I would still continue to sell, but it's hard to find a young person who wants to work that hard now a days. I would pay them very good. My 80 year old mother has come to live with me and I really enjoy taking care of her. she is very happy here. A little confused at times, but we deal with that, It bothers her sometimes having to depend on me, but like I told her it's the cycle of life. she took care of me now it's my turn to take care of her. I know the Good Lord has great things in store for me and I'm truly looking forward to this new chapter.
I consider myself a very lucky, happy person. God has truly blessed me, in many ways.
I have a very loving husband (35 years) and 2 great children. I have had a great life so far, jst looking forward to the next 60 years. )HaHa)
I'll keep you posted.
