Cheryl's Story

I hope old friends remember me as someone that was fun to be around. I always wanted to be a CPA when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were right. My favorite way to relax is to grab a beer, a book, and an Adirondack chair and sit lakeside watching the sun go down. The wildest thing I ever did in high school was smoke a joint out in back of the high school during lunch break while the teachers paraded up and down. The wildest thing I did in college was take a wild drunken ride through campus in a grocery cart. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have quiet, space, and personal items to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My hero would probably be Stephen King. He's funny looking and shy but man, can he write and it has made him rich beyond belief, and yet he's still with his highschool sweetheart. I lived in Bolton until I was 5. My dad moved us to South Windsor because he wanted us to go to good schools. I moved to North Granby when I first got married to be close to work. Then we moved to East Hartford because it was what we could afford and then we moved to Tolland because it was quiet and we found the perfect house, 400 feet off the road. When our family began to grow, we moved to a bigger house, also in Tolland, because we didn't want them to have to switch schools. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Justin Sullivan, because he was my first love. I can't stand sports. I watch hockey, UConn Women's basketball and NASCAR only because my husband does. I love reality TV. I love to watch the dynamics of relationships change. I'm obsessed with genealogy. My mom says I won't stop until I get all the way back to Adam and Eve. My biggest surprise has been that I got married so early and it has lasted so long. I can't imagine my life with anyone else. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel my pool and add on a fire pit. My dream home would be spa-like. My kids have taught me that you must lead by example. They are always watching you. I would love to see my 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Hood again so I could thank her for teaching us how to make butter and so I could ask her what on Earth possessed her to name her son Robin!! If I won $100 million, I'd give one million of it to my mom, then spend the rest on my kids, traveling, and animal shelters. I only went to college for one year. I was so used to being under my dad's thumb that I went a little wild. We had a first floor corner room our freshman year and we had some great parties. I joined the only sorority on campus and had a ball. I drank alot of grain alcohol and am amazed that I lived to tell the stories. I had to quit after one year because I was out of control. To be truly happy - Again, I gotta say sitting on the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee next to my husband, with a beer in hand watching the sun go down. Those are some sweet moments. My current age is 47. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be rich. I was so completely misguided. I don't have any care...Expand for more
er aspirations. I work to make money to afford to do the things I truly enjoy. If I can have a little fun doing it and make a couple friends, well, that's just gravy. I have no idea what happened to my first crush. I believe he married the girl he dumped me for and became a lawyer in Hartford. My best friend would tell you I'm shy, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as stuck up. At least that's what people told me after we graduated school. What I had to be stuck up about, I'll never know! Oh God! I have no style. My kids have to dress me. I prefer jeans and baggy sweatshirts. I do like to get my nails done, but I'm not a real girly-girl. The weirdest job I ever had was LUST Coordinator for the US Postal service. It stands for Leaking Underground Storage Tanks. I was project manager for the removal and replacement of underground fuel oil tanks at all the Northeast Area postal facilities. We replaced them with natural gas or aboveground tanks. It was interesting work. I share my home with cats, which I find ridiculous. I am a dog person and my husband is severely allergic to cats. In a moment of weakness, we gave in to the kids. Now the kids are gone, but the cats are still here!! I have a trophy from my days as the LUST Coordinator that was specially made in the shape of an oil tank. It was a parting gift from my colleagues. I also have the 2001 Acoustics Superbowl Trophy which I won by picking the most winning football teams in a season of football pools. Funny thing is, I made my picks by going left column, right column, left column, and so on, which just goes to show you.....it's all crap! One do-over? That's easy. We should have bought the 24 foot Grady White instead of the 25. We could have put it on a trailer and we'd still have the damn thing. The marina fees are what killed us. In 10 years, I hope to be alive. I'm going to get there by exercising. I have spent the last 47 years treating my body like crap and this year I had a wake up call. Time to treat my body better before I lose it. My oldest and dearest friend is Sue Billings Maillet Downs. We met when I first moved into my house in South Windsor. She had just moved in next door. She had 2 older sisters and no brothers. I had 2 older sisters and no brothers. We understood each other immediately and still do. She "gets" me. The thing that will surprise most people at our 30th high school reunion will be the weight that I've gained. I was one of the skinniest kids in school and now I'm twice that size. I still haven't figured out how that happened. I HATED being skinny. Now I'd give anything to be that thin. My first job was at Heartland Food Warehouse, where I got paid alot of money to fool around all day. What I remember most about it is the friends I made. A childhood memory I'll never forget? Hmmmmmm. Playing kickball (or Red Rover, or Statue, or Tag) in our side yard with all the neighborhood kids. There were so many of them and we were all friends. It was like having dozens of siblings.
