Chris's Story

Life Some of the things I do these days: Still swimming, in pools, in SF Bay, and in nearby lakes, with the the Manatees Aquatic Masters (MAM), a great group of people, in Oakland, Also doing a bit of coaching, and using a Flip HD camera and YouTube to provide video feedback to the swimmers. I Swam 307 miles in 2008, 540 miles in 2009, and 515 miles for 2010, ended 2011 with 415 miles, 515 miles in 2012, 220 miles in 2013 (shoulder problem slowed me down), 253 miles in 2014, and 370 miles in 2015! Competed in the 2010 US Masters Open Water Championships and placed 9th in the 1.5 mile swim. Swam the Alcatraz to SF swim in mid-September (2011) and that was fun...Beautiful views of SF and the Golden Gate from the middle of the Bay. Swam the Golden Gate from SF to Marin on August 1, 2009 (sans wetsuit). Cold but fun! Swam the Inverness Community Tomales Bay swim (1 mile - across and back) in 2009, 2010, and 2012, and that was the most fun I've had in an open water swim! Very welcoming community and a very low-key and friendly event..and the water was a bit warmer than SF Bay. The jelly fish have been real thick on the eastern edge of the Bay, and swimming through them feels like swimming through hundreds of white balls of jelly. And a few stings to show for it, although we didn't notice the stings until out of the water. Am becoming less tolerant of the cooler water in the Winter, and rarely drop into SF Bay without a wetsuit, yet in December of 2014 and January of 2015, the water was unusually warm, and we swam in...Expand for more
the Bay without wetsuits…once for more than an hour. I often see sea lions while out in the Bay, and last summer had the experience of being bumped by a seal. It was funny. The seal was a juvenile gray harbor seal that apparently wanted to have some fun. After bumping each of us a couple of times, it surfaced right next to us (within reach) and just hung out with us for about 10 minutes. Very fun. Haven't seen any of the sharks that people say are out there... Swam in Lake Tahoe in September. The water was like glass, and it was warmer than expected. Beautiful solo early morning swim! The lakes around here (except Lake Tahoe) just don't seem as fresh, especially as they warm up. This might be changing in 2016 as the rains and snow continues to fall. Fingers crossed for a lot more water! And there is always a wonderful peace of mind than when finning through the Ocean or Bay... Flying around Northern California. Playing the ukulele Dabbling with the harmonica Reffing club and high school soccer Sea kayaking. Travelling to anywhere, and Diving...when I get the opportunity. College Graduated from Pacific Lutheran University. It was a fun time. I remain in touch with many of my PLU teammates, and our Coach. Our most recent get-together at PLU was outstanding! Workplace I have been working in the Tech Staffing market in the Bay Area. It's extremely gratifying putting people to work, and I like playing in the technology arena. My focus in the Staffing Industry has been in the IT and Engineering sectors.
