Christine's Story

Life I went to live in Cambridge, England with my family in 1969 and have never returned to Calgary. I hope to one day go for a holiday. I met my husband in England and soon after we were married we came to live in Australia. I am now divorced and live with my 18 year old son and my 7 year old foster son (who I am in the process of adopting). I live in a small town called Bulli (pronounced Bull-eye) which is on the east coast about 50 miles south of Sydney in New South Wales. The closest large town is Wollongong. I have lived here for 30 years. We live about a three minute walk from the beach. I like to walk along the beach, sit and read or play with my son making sandcastles. It isn't very developed along our stretch of coastline and is very pretty with the ocean, beach, some houses and then the rain forest escarpment. For most of my working life I have worked as the Medical Records Administrator at two local hospitals. I left all that behind a few years ago to become a foster carer. As a foster carer I have had 28 babies between newborn and 5 years old but now I have my 7 year old long term. Hopefully the adoption will go through later this year. We have three pets, a Cockatiel called Leo, a dog, Ally and a cat, Maggie who is huge and eats us out of house and home. I am in my third and final year at college. I have been doing Media studies and would like to do freelance writing. I like to write feature stories and articles. I am currently writing my life story which is taking on a life of its own because as I dig up memories others come to mind too and they aren't all happy ones. It is very cathart...Expand for more
ic and makes me take a closer look at myself. Living all of those experiences has made me who I am. I am also writing my foster sons life story so that he knows where he comes from. I was diagnosed with MS a few years ago after years of symptoms which came and went or came and stayed in some cases. I am OK though, still on my feet, even if I do have to drag them around sometimes. I keep positive and busy and I think that is what keeps me going. Along with my children that is. I like to read mystery/thriller type novels, go to the cinema, go for walks, meet friends. I enjoy studying but I will take some time off at the end of the year when I have finished my Advanced Diploma in Media Studies. I would like to do a course in Web Design sometime. I have dabbled a bit but would like to do more. That is me in a nutshell! 2006 Well, it is a new year now and my plans to take time off study flew out the door! I enrolled at The University of Wollongong where I am doing a Bachelor of Arts with a major in History. The subjects I am taking are: Ancient Greek and Italian - A Clash of Civilizations, The Cold War and After, Australian Studies - Living in Australia 1800-2006, Australian Studies - Narrating the Nation, Italy and the Italians - Culture and History plus a couple of other subjects. I am really excited about going to University. I wasn't too thrilled with study when I had to do it at school in my younger days, but now I can't get enough. I like to be challenged and I'm sure that being a sole parent, foster carer, full time student and having MS is challenging, but hey, at least I know I'm alive! 2007
