Christopher's Story
After 23 years, fifteen as General Manager, in October 2007, I resigned my position as GM at the Newport Yachting Center. It was a very hard decision for me to make, as was my decision to leave my teaching position at Bishop Stang in 1993, because I had put so much of myself into the job, but the time was right.
In 1993, I was given a chance to build a business from scratch, which is now one of the most vital organizations in the tourist and hospitality industry in the State of Rhode Island. Over the past 15 years, I have learned a great deal about building a business model that interacts, thrives and is part of a community. I always believed and still do, that my experience as a teacher and coach is what helped make me be so successful in the hospitality, event and business world.
I have been asked many times in the past year, why I decided then to move on. No real good answer other than I have always been passionate about what I do in life. My jobs are vocations. Making a difference, how small or large has always been the driving force behind all that I have done. After 23 years, I need a change. uels my soul. I think at this time in my life, I have a great more to offer as an educator because of all that I have been through and have accomplished in the past two decades.
I am currently the Director of Operations at O¿Neill Properties New England and the Chief Operating Offer at The Carnegie Abbey Club, a five-star private club on Portsmouth, R.I. beautiful but hidden waterfront. I have done well there over the past few seasons, but hope one day to be come a leader in the non-profit world.
Most of you who still know me, my middle son John is autistic and I have dedicated the better part of the last 10 years in trying to make his life as normal as possible and help those other special children like him. I currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Autism Project which I helped start from the ground floor 10 years ago. I still coach, but my daughter gets the benefit of my little lessons and stories of Roger¿s, Salve and Bishop Stang. If time prohibits, I would love to coach once again competitively, as it does help with the stress, not sure if it adds to it, but it helps. Life is to short, send me an e-mail and lets catch up or see how we can help each other.
