Christopher's Story
College
I spent 5 of the best years of my life at the University of Texas, although, at first, I had no desire to go there. My experience in Austin would have been difficult to duplicate, but I wonder if we all look back on college and romanticize what it was really like. I lived in at least 7 different apartments, worked two jobs at some points, ruined my GPA by having too much fun...but in some ways, I wouldn't have changed a thing. Yes, my poor GPA ruined my chances of immediately getting into medical school, but along the way I spent 5 fantastic years in one of my favorite cities. The university finally encouraged me to graduate, since I ran out of financial aid options, but along the way, I learned to row, competing in cities across the country. I was able to row in one of the best rowing cities in the country: long, lush, green riverbanks with flat water and no motor traffic with year-round rowing. I ultimately gathered myself together to graduate with a BS Biochem...Expand for more
istry in 1995, grudgingly moving to Houston to live with Mom and Dad until I found a job.
I completed a MA Medical Sciences degree at Boston University School of Medicine, completing that in 2004, when I subsequently began medical school, also at BU, to complete my degree in 2008, hoping to specialize in cardiology.
Workplace
I began working as a technician at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX working in a developmental embryology lab where I gained experience using confocal microscopy. This landed me a new position running the school's microscopy core facility. Bio-Rad Labs then hired me and moved me to San Francisco to work in their confocal microscopy division as a field support person, traveling across the US, getting on planes as often as other people get on busses. But the travel life wore me down after a few years, so I resettled in Boston with Bio-Rad. I left the company to return to pursue a Masters and then, hopefully, medical school in July 2003.
