Chuck's Story

Life Now, life has been a zigzag journey: Started off in Tennessee, went to college in KY and then in Tennessee, dropped out to join the military (Air Force), married, had 4 kids, learned Russian and traveled all over (Mostly to Europe and the Mideast-Persian Gulf), got out after Desert Storm spent a few years back in Knoxville working with family business, divorced, dad died, moved to Canada, left Canada after a year, moved to Florida in 2000 and lived on a sailboat in Jacksonville/St. Augustine for over two years, remarried and voila, am living in Tampa. School I'm not one to live in the past, but will wax the nostalgia every now and then...hence I'm on here. School was a place where I started figuring things out...not that I have all the answers, but I at least know where to look now. I've only run into a few old acquaintances since high school. Never made it to any reunions...the weekend we held our ten year reunion, I was sitting on alert (and that monday left for Saudi Arabia) for the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. College I was obsessed with travel and moving on and didn't take college seriuosly...do I regret that now. Nope. I wouldn't be where I am today if I'd not been on the channel I'd just cruised down. Am I better off for the partying I did back then, the friends I hung out with, the classes I cut, or the infatuations I endured? Sure...but hindsight 20/20, I should have saved my tuition and got in on the ground floor of Microsoft with that money...talk about a hefty return...sheesh. Military Went into the Air Force in 83, was to become a Russian Linguist, met my 1st wife (she was also to be a linguist), married and we were to have a child. Morning sickness kept her from Russian classes, and she was in jeopardy of washing out...which meant being stationed in different parts of the world. So, as she was washing out, I threw it...so that we could ...Expand for more
get stationed together. We did...in California. I became a truck driver with a Top Secret Clearance. That landed me the only enlisted person in my Transportation Squadron besides the 1st Sergeant, and in the 80s, with Reagan in the White House, and him having a ranch in California, I got put on Presidential Support when he would come to his ranch. I did get to the ranch twice, and it was way out of the way in the mountains, but cool. My first opportunity to crosstrain, I did...I became a radio operator on AWACS (the plane with the big radar dome that looks like a frisbee on top). It seemed I collected mail in Oklahoma City, traveling a lot with the culminating trip to Saudi Arabia after the invasion of Kuwait...I was part of the line in the sand. I rotated in and out of Riyadh several times in the year that followed, and on Labor Day, 1991, I had enough...after 8 years in, I looked at the writing on the wall, the USSR was splintered off, the cold war was over...time to get out. In peacetime, military budgets would have to be defended, thus, "situations" manufactured (i.e., Somalia, Haiti, Bosnia) that had nothing to do with US National Security...and when that happens, good people get hurt. I was awarded a few prestigious medals for my service...most notably the Air Achievement Medal and the one I'm most proud of, the Air Medal. Civilian Life Now I live in a quiet neighborhood just north of Tampa, work from home for the Medicare division of a large insurance company and plan my life around the next big trek. Got back to Paris & Rome in 2018, did a Transatlantic Cruise just before Covid hit in November of 2019, headed back to Europe in the fall of 2022, This time I finally checked visiting Switzerland and seeing the Matterhorn from my bucket list. I ended up in Vegas for my 60th bday in November, and will likely do an Alaskan cruise in 2025. Busy busy.
