Chuck's Story
Life
Hey! A bio!
(With apology to Miss Abbe)
I was married in high school to a girl from Walters, Gerri Meyer. I went to Army basic right after graduation for the National Guard. Not finding much to do around Temple and feeling I was answering a call, I joined the United States Marine Corps. We did some traveling for schools before being assigned to the 1st Force Service Support Group, 1st Maintenance Bn. Electronics Maintenance Company aboard Camp Pendleton. During our time there Gerri grew restless for home.
We divorced after three children.
My return to civilian life was well timed. GTE was hiring. I hired on to work the Grandfield, Chattanooga, Faxon, Loveland area.
It was long hours and many trips from one end of the counties to the other but I had a dispatcher who kept me on the straight and narrow. I'd call in in the morning for work assignments and she'd tell me what to do. I was working the Grandfield area one day when I noticed I was being followed by a blue Camaro. Great I thought, I have work to do and someone wants me to fix their phone right now. I continued on for a few miles then decided to stop. It was the dispatcher, Jana Mills. She's been telling me what to do now for 33 years.
GTE was leaving Oklahoma for Texas. I decided not to go so I started looking for other employment. Mahorney Communications was a father & sons operation working on mostly Oil Field radio and electronics. I hired on with the father in Velma then moved to Lindsay to work for his son. Jana liked it because she was home.
I enjoyed the job. Working on my own and traveling around the state to oil rigs and oil HQ's. We all know...Expand for more
what happened to the oil boom in the early 80's though.
Highest paid is the first to go.
That is when I started with the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety as a radio tech out of the Troop H HQ in Clinton Okla.
My job responsibility grew to include Troop I in Guymon, Troop G in Lawton and Troop M in Altus. I also had responsibilities at Troop J in Enid. By then I was a Senior Radio Maintenance Tech.
Now we're talking serious road time and travel from Bosie City in the Oklahoma panhandle to Velma, then south to the Red River and up to Kansas. I spent many hours on the road.
In Jan. of 95 I was hurt on the job at the Vici Radio tower.
Early trips to the Dr. never found anything. I worked the bombing in Okc while taking 500mg Tylenol like it was candy. Towards the end of the year my Dr sent me to a specialist. I had blown my back out and had started getting calcium build up around the nerve. Four operations later, Medical retirement from DPS and nine years hoping nothing else would blow, I landed a job in Lawton/Ft Sill.
I'm a member of the Marine Corps League, the Marine Riders and a Patriot Guard Rider. I have a 2001 Teal/White Road King Classic and a 1999 custom paint Sportster, (now 2014 also a Ultra Classic Electra Glide)
too much information?
Notice I didn't tell any stories of school life in Temple?
It's cause I've learned it's best never to confess someone else's sins! I was, after all, the quiet shy type ;)
Workplace
I'm a Field Service Engineer on Fort Sill.
Reading this over I'll note that Gerri, our family Dr and Mr Mahorney have all passed away.
We've added several grandchildren to the tree.
