Chuck's Story
Update...
Donna and I have moved back to Alabama... we are now residing in Talladega. Yes, the 2.66 mile super speedway is right here. I have accepted the responsibility to oversee the water & environmental services department for the City of Talladega. Donna has retired... which I have come to enjoy knowing she is cooking more often now.
We are in the process of purchasing a house here to call home. Industry data says that a person in my field will change jobs 3 times over the life of their career... this is my third change so hopefully I will be one of those averages. I love it here; perfect weather year-round (no snow), the foothills of Appalachian Mountains are just outside of town. Cheaha Mountain (highest point in Alabama) is 15 minutes away. And of course the speedway is right here... that's just the tip of the highlights and attractions that brought us back to Alabama. You really got to come here to fully understand. The best part Donna is 4.5 hours from Gulf Shores beaches where her family is and I am 9 hours from G'burg.
As for our goal to live in Kentucky/Tennessee... well after getting her; this is the place where I want to live out the rest of my life. I have a big picture of the future and we feel this is where God led us.
I joined Classmates thinking it would help me reconnect with some other classmates, so far so good. I have contact with some of my classmates and its great to share some news about one another and to reminisce about the old days, but the best part is just dropping a line and saying hello because you wanted to and don't feel you have to do it. [I still hate being told what to do].
you can email me at [cthomerson58 at gmail dot com].
Oh, about school... biggest crush? You know who you are (were). Which teacher inspired me most? Ms. Richey; I loved art and still do. Who could possibly forget the thump on the back of the head in Mr. Wenning's math class for saying "I don't know"; and you can't forget Mr. Rupp's Science class either. If you tossed trash in the wastebasket; you better not miss. He'd make you hold your arm straight out over the trash can until he was tired of looking at you. Who could forget Mr. Duncan... dang I knew I shouldn't have skipped class, but a heartfelt thank you to you girls who would take care of our names on the absent list. Can't really say I loved Social Studies or US History... wasn't too concerned about what went on in the past, but dang sure was concerned about what was going to happen on Friday night!
Anyway, high school should have been more fun, but I blew it, so yes, I'd probably do it over again, geesh how I remember those days. Life's great today, so life's lessons have been hard, but good to me.
My funniest moment... too many for a favorite! Happiest, when I got a first place ribbon in an art show. As for craziest memory... being a sophomore at G'burg and being invited to the senior at North Decatur to the prom.
Some of my best times were skipping mechanical drafting and/or wood shop to go eat breakfast and my days at the Ranch (Harvest, now) Supermarket on the stock crew. The nights of getting off work and running the streets with Charlie, Dale and Kenny. Who didn't like the 70's?
Peace
From the Story Wizard...
1. How do you hope old friends remember you? As one that could and did.
2. I always wanted to be a race car driver when I grew up. My family and
friends thought that was a ridiculous idea. As it turns out, they were right.
3. Blow off steam or relax? Headphones and Classic Rock.
4. What's the wildest thing you ever did in school? Got stoned and went to
class. Give me a break, it was the early 70's... admit it, you did it too or
you wanted to, but were afraid.
5. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have my wits about me, a cup of
coffee, and a morning prayer to be able to deal with the day-to-day.
6. Do you have a hero? Jesus Christ is my hero. Talk about where your
inspiration comes from... Red, my wife and the fact that I love what I do.
7. Where have you lived? Greensburg, Indiana; Tucson, Arizona, Mt. Sterling,
Kentucky; West Palm Beach, Florida; Gulf Shores, Alabama; Columbus,
Nebraska and now Talladega, Alabama. Why did you move? I left Indiana
because I was tired of the winters... Arizona because I was girl crazy...
Kentucky because I went on the road with a rock band as a soundman
(what a way to travel and see places)... Florida, I went to Alabama to open
a combination hurricane/security shutter company, but ended up in the
municipal utility business... Alabama because the opportunity to further my
career in the municipal sector presented itself... Nebraska because I wanted
to get closer to both of our families... now hopefully, I won't have to move
again, but only God knows.
8. The one person from my past who I'd m...Expand for more
ost like to see again? (you know
who you are), because she broke my heart.
9. Share your obsessions... music, environment, college football, NASCAR,
woodworking, training operators, sightseeing, but most importantly...
spending time with my wife.
10. Life doesn't always turn out the way you expect. What's been your biggest
surprise? That my wife has put up with me for the last 24 years.
11. If I could improve my home, what would I do? Heck, if I could just get this
deal closed on this house I'd be happy. As for what my dream home would
be... I already built it once in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
12. Parent? Share what you've learned in life with your children or better yet, share
what you learned from your children... We all make mistakes; just be sure to learn
from those mistakes. Don't take life so seriously that you miss out on the finite
things we take for granted and most importantly know that God answers prayers.
13. Which teacher would you love to see again? I am better off not answering this
question. Why? Because I had a crush on her.
14. If I won $100 million... after Uncle Sam to half of it, I'd give half of the remaining
to my bank account, then spend the rest on my mom and pop, our families, and
my friends.
15. Ever live in a dorm? Join the Greek system? Talk about campus life... Nope.
16. To be truly happy, you would be where, doing what, with whom? Its best I
plead the fifth to this one.
17. My current age? 54... when I was 12, I thought that people my age now were
pretty old. I was completely wrong.
18. Working hard? Reveal your career aspirations. At this point in time, I hope
there is social security when I retire and before I retire I want to be my own
boss and a consultant.
19. What happened to your first crush? She's still alive and living in Indiana.
20. How would people describe me? My best friend would tell you I'm great
to be around and a straight up guy, but people who don't know me very well
would probably describe me as reserved. I soak in my surroundings.
21. Do you still dress like you did 10 (or 20) years ago? Talk style... No, now I
wear dress pants, long sleeve oxford shirts and dress shoes or a suit...
that's a long way from Levis, a henley, suspenders and tennis shoes.
22. What's the weirdest job you ever had? I don't know about weird, but it was
a wild job... I was a bouncer in a night club.
23. I share my home with my wife, my chihuahua, and 3 cats I find amusing daily.
24. Got trophies on your mantel? Share a big victory... The William D. Hatfield
Award... look it up. Its a hard one to come by.
25. You get one do-over. What do you do differently? Take back the years of
my life that I wasted.
26. In 10 years, I hope to be my own boss... I have a big aspiration and plan, but
I'm only going to get there by working my butt off.
27. Talk about your oldest friend; how you met and why you clicked. Wayne Shake...
you know how it is when you become friends with someone and you just know
they're a friend for life... that's Wayne. We had a lot of fun growing up.
28. What about you would surprise everyone at your high school reunion? Gee,
that I still have hair on my head... I turned out okay, still have my wits about me,
and I am not the same person they remembered from high school. I feel pretty
successful with my life today. Thank you Lord!
29. My first job was at Ranch Supermarket, where I got paid to stock shelves
and carry out groceries. What I remember most about it is all the good
times with Charlie, Dale and Kenny.
30. Share a childhood memory you'll never forget... okay, I have more than
one, so here it goes. I remember having a grape fight with my brothers at
grandma's and chasing them up an apple tree then falling out of the tree
and breaking my wrist. Chasing down Billy Dewanger to get Marcia's scarf
back. My third grade crush on Jill. Being voted the King at Church Youth
Camp and the girl (Debbie Scarberry) I had a crush on being voted Queen;
then we got to spend more time together. The laughs Kim Begley and I
shared in typing class and last but certainly not least... my sister Marie
sticking my foot with a straight pin to keep me awake on Friday nights at
her house so I wouldn't get up with the chickens. There are many more
and I have this Story Wizard to thank for bringing them back. Maybe
someday I can sit down with those of you from my yesteryears and
reminisce... oh, 35+ years have come and gone, but as far as I can tell
I am just a better, more mature version of me...
Now, it is your turn... if you don't do it, at least I know you can't say I didn't.
God Bless
