Cindy's Story
Life
Ben Carter and I have been married for five years and are currently living in Japan. It's just the two of us enjoying life wherever the Navy sends us. I am currently teaching English as a second language to a class of Japanese adults. I have a smaller class of only about 10 students and I really love it. Most of my students speak English at a conversational level and are looking for instruction in grammar, reading, and writing. I am working them through phonics and basic grammar right now. It only keeps me busy for a couple of hours a week so I fill the rest of my time with church, volunteer work and travel.
I am getting used to driving on the other side of the road and am quite good with the train systems. Ben and I both enjoy getting out to see new things and because we're only about an hour by train from Tokyo there are lots of fun things to go see and do locally. Japan has a very rich culture and it would definitely be a shame to miss out while we are here. We have both become sushi devotees and want to try as much of the local food as possible. My language skills are seriously lacking, but I have picked up polite terms and how to ask for things when shopping (of course!).
I teach the preschool age Sunday school class at our church (Lighthouse Baptist Church) and that keeps me on my toes. Wow! - that...Expand for more
age is a handful, but they are lots of fun. I have a group of about 6 boys and 2 girls each week ranging from 3 to 5 years old. It is my first experience with working that age and I have to say it has been a big learning experience for me.
Ben is an electronic warfare officer in the Navy's EA6-B Prowler jet and is currently assigned to the USS KittyHawk. He's racking up his carrier catapults and traps (landings) and is loving it. The squadron here has a fan club made up of Japanese nationals (flying and observing flights is a huge hobby in this area) and they actually have model airplanes with the squadron insignia and even action figures of some of the crews. It's somewhat surreal. Ben keeps busy with his flying responsibilities and his secondary duties as the squadron legal officer. He can put together a mean power of attorney in no time flat. :)
Most of my family is in San Antonio, TX now. I get home now and then to visit. Jeni is married and is finishing her bachelor's degree while working with the Air National Guard. My dad is finally retiring from active duty USAF in December and plans to move back to the San Antonio area when he's finished (he's flying RC-135s right now in Nebraska).
Well that's all I can think of for now. I'll try and get in here to update this regularly. Thanks for reading!
