Clare's Story

So here's what I'm up to: As of 2/09 I'm still working (25-30 hours a week) as a designer and sales rep for a Sunnyvale-based Sign Company. My 2nd husband of almost 25 years, David, works there as well (in project management and fabrication). We commute over the Santa Cruz Mountains separately everyday, from our home in Felton ( 6 miles, up into the Redwoods, from the fun beach town of Santa Cruz). We live on an acre and a half of redwoods; and, after 20 years, I'm finally beginning to master gardening in a redwood forest. It's been quite a challenge. Of course, we share the garden with our gorgeous yellow banana slugs, deer, raccoons, skunks, etc., which is part of the deal. My son Wilson, from my first marriage, lives down in Corona Del Mar, and is doing very well. He has yet to find his soulmate, but he's looking. His son, Dillon (age 9-3/4), lives in Texas with his Mommy, the beautiful Kim, and Step-Dad Todd, half sister, Morgan, and step brother, Parker. He visits us at Christmas, and for a month each summer. My sister, Alexi, and her two grown kids, Emma and Christopher, live in Santa Cruz, only 15 minutes away from us, which is great! Emma is in her last year of college at Cal Poly, and Christopher, the consummate surfer, attends Cabrillo College. (See my photo album for some snaps of the gang). We love doing things with our family. We will be achieving that end in July '09, when David, Wilson, Dillon, and I, will travel to Massachusetts to visit Davids Mum, Dad, Sister Ellen, and brother-in-law Peter, for a 10 day vacation. We adore visiting our Wilde New England family!!! When we're not working we like hiking, bird watching, eating great food, and travel (both to Europe and other parts of the U.S.). We love history, old buildings, quaint villages, meeting new people, and experiencing different cultures. Our favorites are Italy (Venice, Verona, Varenna on Lake Como, and Vicenza - the four V's), the English Countryside & London, the French Countryside & Paris, and Austria (especially Hallstatt). Domestically: we love Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, New England, and Tuscon (for a complete change of pace). Sundays are generally our time to explore our local treasures (Pt. Lobos & Carmel, Monterey, Santa Cruz, Big Basin, Henry Cowell State Park, Ano Nuevo, and San Francisco). Of course all these places offer great bird-watching, mammal watching, and hiking. We make a point of going to Yosemite at least once a year to celebrate our wedding (which was at the top of Glacier Point at dawn). Yosemite is my Church. We especially enjoy going up to Ashland, Oregon, to the Shakespeare Festival. 5 Plays in 3 days, a stay at a darling B&B, Oak Street Station, and great eateries for every meal. Our two favorite Thai restaurants are there. You can't beat it!!! Unfort...Expand for more
unately, we haven't been able to fit that trip into our busy scheudle for a while, but we will return! The Repertory Company there (which performs not only Shakespeare, but contemporary and original plays as well) is fabulous!!! David is a wonderful photographer, and is hopefully turning his beloved hobby into a career. Time will tell. Naturally, he takes many great pics during our various travel adventures. My photography has improved dramatically under his tutelage. We both love to cook, and have spent many happy hours creating our own recipes (inspired by our various travels) and reverse engineering great dishes we've had at our favorite restaurants. . David makes his own noodles, which is a great start to some of our favorites: White Pesto Chicken Lasagna, and B-B-Q's Salmon Ravioli with a red bell pepper pesto, My newest - Melanzana Lasagna sans noodles. We also make a mean pork tenderloin with an apricot jalapeno chutney. We love classical music, and have season tickets to the San Francisco Symphony. We also love jazz, rock, and most other styles of music, and try to attend a variety of concerts often. I'm a movie junky, and go once a week with one of my best friends, Denise. I walk up our steep hill every morning (2+ miles) with my good friend, and neighbor, Judy, to keep in shape. It's great aerobic exercise, and it's in the beautiful, and therapeutic redwoods. What could be better ?! I have finally stopped collecting. I love Antiques (old wooden boxes & buckets , pewter, ironstone, brass candlesticks, and children's books). I have a huge general book collection - mainly about innovation and discovery (Newton, Gallileo,The Wright Brothers, Pasteur, Maxwell, etc.). I also collect Victorian Poetry books with beautiful bindings. Of course, our tiny house is now overflowing with books, and my various collections, so I have had to discontinue adding to any of them. Time to just enjoy them. I am learning Italian ( since I love that country so much), and listen to Italian lessons everyday while I commute to work (on my I-Pod). At my age, this is a difficult undertaking, but my philosophy is ..."Use it or Loose it"... so I keep at it. I garden everyday. David contributes with his talent for infrastructure. He has built many beautiful rock retaining walls and pathways... creating a wonderful garden environment to work in. We recently tore out our old, dilapidated deck, and replaced it with a much larger, more functionally-configured one (using Timber Tech, not actual redwood). We also built up the garden pathways circumventing it, which enlarged the level area of our yard by quite a bit. We built many retaining walls to achieve this, and now have to find the dirt to fill them in!!! So there you have it. Healthy, Happy, and Enjoying Life to the Fullest! Hope you can say the same!! Cheers Clare
