Claude's Story

Life After completing Concord College I taught social studies at Iaeger High for 3 years. At Concord I learned that I could get my degree and have success if I worked hard and long. My reading rate was slow and this required me to spend a tremendous amount of time studying and outlining chapters into notes. I would hate to say how much time I spend memorizing facts, but I discovered that after I memorized the facts I could see relationships, cause and effects, and could draw conclusions. I decided in college that I would make "it" no matter what "it" was. My goal was to become Superintendent of McDowell County Schools but I changed my mind after I saw how much politics and "brown nosing" went with the job. I also chose a better path. I met my wife Jenelle on January 17 1967 and I was never the same again. I tried hard not to get "settled down" but found this was the path I wanted and as Frost wrote and that has made all the difference. I no longer saw it a super important to get my doctorate degree or certification for Superintendent. I relish in the love my grandkids give and cherish the time I spend with them and my son and daughter. I keep busy doing volunteer work, babysitting, gardening, working at the real estate office, and going on vacations to Myrtle Beach, The Smoky Mountains, and trout fishing. God has been good to me. I've been married over 40 years and can say honestly that I love my wife Jenelle many times more than when we got married. She almost daily tells me she loves me, will put her arms around my waist and tells me how fortunate she is to have married me. I've always thought I was the fortunate one. I retired as principal at Iaeger Ele. in 2000 and Jenelle retired on January 21, 2004. I'm enjoying working on the hardwood floors, installing appliances and doing a myriad of other jobs. In my thirties my wife and I joined the Iaeger United Methodist Church and the people of my church have been a blessing and a model of Christian love. I've tried to emulate many of the traits that my church family posesses. Since moving to Inwood we joined the Pikeside Methodist Chruch and have enjoyed making new friends at church and in the community of Foxcrest Manor in which we live. As Secretary/treasurer I get to meet the residents and on the most part they're wonderful people. At age 38 years of age I told my mother I loved her for the first time in my memory. My mother was not the kissy, kissy type who expressed her love for her children by...Expand for more
her words but by her deeds. By cooking, cleaning, sewing, gardening and with advice and ,occasionally, whacks on the behind. I came to see what a great impact my mother had on my life. My father died when I was six and my mother had to serve as mother and father to five kids from ages 14 through four. The older I became I realized how difficult a life she had and I never, never heard her complain about the burden she was given. Mom passed away in 2000 and I'll always thank God for the mother I had. As a educator I saw many families simply fall apart because of some problems or trouble partly because the parent or parents didn't take up the challenge and do what was necessary. Being a good parent is difficult and parents are the true heroes in America. As a college graduate as realize I could have made more money outside of education, but money isn't everything. I have a treasure chest of memories of students. I always looked for the good in my students and thought that God didn't make any junk. I confess though that the impact I had on some students was slight. I enjoy the contacts I have with my former students who start the conversation with " Do you remember when.....? " Workplace Taught Social Studies Classes at Iaeger High from 1966 till June 1969. Taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grade departmentalized science at Iaeger Elementary from 1969 till fall of 1971. Became principal of Coalwood Elementary from 1971 till 1972. Principal of Iaeger Intermediate (JR High) from 1972 till 1989. Principal of Iaeger Elementary till level computer classes for GED classes at the Big Creek People in Action Center in Caretta. In February 2004 my wife and I moved to Inwood WV in the Eastern Panhandle ( Berkeley county). In June 2006 I passed my licensing test as a real estate agent and I worked for Hometowne Realty in Inwood WV. I've enjoyed some success as a realtor but it's difficult to sale homes in the present economic times. I've become more involved with activities at our new church, working with the Shepherding Committee, the Board of Trustees, the Methodist Men and the Habitat for Humanity Re-store. Since I last updated my profile, we've had a new addition. My aughter, Beth, gave birth to a son, Sam, in 2006. Jenelle and I are blessed with our children and 4 grandchildren. We miss all our friends, former students from Iaeger, and our associates we worked with. We don't get to visit Iaeger as often as we would like, but know that part of us will always be in Iaeger.
