Clint's Story

Life The second semester of my senior year in high school wasn't what I had expected. My parents divorced and I began to make some really poor decisions. I almost didn't have the opportunity to graduate with my class. With the help of some caring people, I was able to chart a better course for myself. I earned some college credit which, combined with my subpar high school grades, allowed me to walk with my class. After graduation I got a decent paying job at Fort Irwin. I worked at the Fitness Center. When my life began to stabilize, I went back to church. That lead to a desire to serve a two-year term as a missionary in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I saved a lot of the money I earned at Fort Irwin to fund the two years I served as a missionary. I lived in Argentina from April of 1992 to April of 1994. Through the experience I had in Argentina, I was able to gain a better perspective on life, not to mention fluency in the Spanish language and a deep appreciation for South American cultures. Shortly after returning from Argentina I became reaquainted with a wonderful girl (Shiloah) I had met in Barstow, California. She and I dated some before I left for Argentina and she spent the two years I was gone earning an Associates Degree. We corresponded during the entire time I was serving as a missionary and she was still available when I got home, so I asked her to marry me. It was the best decision I ever made in my life. Despite my poor high school grades, I was offered a leadership scholarship to college when I returned to the United States. As a married student, I took my college education seriously and I was able to earn academic scholarships from my freshman year forward. I finished up most of my BA degree by 1998. I then sought employment with a local law firm. After working for the firm for over a year, I applied to law school. I began law school in 2000 and graduated in 2003. I am licensed to practice law in the states of Utah and Nevada. I am a prosecutor. Shiloah and I have four sons. We have been married for thirteen years now. I have changed a lot since high school and I guess its because of those changes that I haven't kept in touch with people I knew back then. I don't have any hard feelings nor do I feel above anyone, I just feel a little embarrassed about some of the situations I caused. I hope that's true for everybody and it isn't just me. School My fondest memories in high school seem to surround extracurricular activities. I enjoyed playing football, cheering in the "rowdy corner" at basketball games, going to the dances, and participating in talent shows and plays. The only academically related activity that was both challenging and fun for me was mock trial. Looking back, I think my experience in mock trial was a significant reason I eventually decided to go to law school....Expand for more
Mr. Scarborough (even though I pretended to not like him back in high school) was a large part of that experience for me. I suppose I owe some of the credit (or blame) for what I have become to him. I liked Coach Hare, Coach Troyer, Coach Spencer, and Coach South. I will never forget the kindness of Coach Spencer when I dislocated my hip in two-a-days my junior year. I could barely move for over a week. They even had to put a portable toilet next to my bed in the livingroom of my parents' house. I was in pain and I felt out of touch with something that was a large source of my self-esteem (even though our football teams were never very good). I just laid there for days feeling sorry for myself. One of the days when I was feeling particularly down Coach Spencer went out of his way to come by my house to see how I was doing. I don't know if he could tell how much that meant to me, but I'll never forget his act of consideration. He encouraged me and assured me that he would keep me a part of the team even though it looked like I was going to miss the entire year. About the girls...maybe it was just my age at the time, but I thought there were more than a couple cute girls in our high school. I liked to talk like you had to go to San Bernardino to meet any really cute girls, but that was just a front. My biggest crushes were obvious to anyone who knew me in high school, but like all teenagers I had some secret crushes that would probably surprise even my closest friends. Back then, the thing I found most attractive in girls was quiet confidence. There are some people that no matter what the situation is they appear completely confident. Those were the obvious ones. But there were other people that whenever you found them in their comfort zones, in their element, you would be surprised how cool they were, how much they shined. If I could do it all over again I would. But if I knew then what I know now, I would do it differently. Workplace Besides a newspaper route as a preteen, my first job was flipping burgers at Burger King for the summer in Woodbridge, Virginia. I never intended on going to college, much less law school. I have to thank my wife for that. When I was about six or seven, my extended family used to kid me for saying that I was going to be an attorney when I grew up. I used to watch Perry Mason back then. Who would have known? Now, my dream would be to make enough money so that I could retire and become a high school teacher and football coach. That probably isn't likely considering that I have four sons worth of college tuition to save up for. Despite working from everything from fast food, working at the Fort Irwin Fitness Center, being a summer camp counselor, and doing janitorial stuff during college, I have to admit life has been good to me. I have no complaints really.
