Colleen's Story
Ready? Right then! After graduation from high school, I went to UCLA where I studied under the degree heading "Biological Sciences". The idea was that I was pre-med, but in my junior year (when it was time to get ready for the MCATS), I decided med school wasn't for me, and that was the beginning of quite a bit of randomness. I decided to travel a bit after graduation (3 months backpacking through New Zealand and Australia), and when I returned home I took the first job I could find, which was as a project secretary for a construction company. Pretty far removed from biology (but still on the UCLA campus)!
When construction was almost finished, I went part time there and found another part-time job doing massage at a chiropractor's office. That was a lot of fun, so I got a certificate in massage and started my own business. Even though I loved interacting with people, it was physically very hard work and I honestly couldn't see how someone small like me could keep it up for very long, so I put a resume in to Amgen (on Marlo Yoshimoto's advice), and got a job there. Thanks, Marlo!
Interspersed throughout the above story was the romance with my now-husband, S...Expand for more
ean Kennedy, who is Australian. We met when he was on a layover from his job in New Zealand in LA on his way to Chicago for work. Because he knew Trish Tierney (ACHS class of '85) from her time at Sydney Uni, he looked her up while he was in town. Trish and I had become good friends while rooming together at UCLA, so she rang me so we could show this Aussie a night on the town, and the rest is history!
We married in 1995 and had our first baby girl in 1998. When she was 6 months old, we took an opportunity to travel to Germany with Sean's work. We stayed for 9 months. I loved it! I only wish I had made more friends and become fluent in the language...
Sean's next placement was in Australia. We moved here May 21st 1999, and have lived here ever since. The rest of our children were born here: two more girls and two boys. I've been a SAHM all these years. So much for all the studying! Should have played more!
Thanks for taking the time to read all that. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I love hearing what people have been up to, so please drop a line.
I hope you are having a great time whatever it is you're doing, wherever you are.
