Colleen's Story

Life I cannot believe I got older...I still feel 26 inside...I cannot believe I got older....Oh well. Hi everyone. I was born in the Newport hospital and we lived on Hoodoo Loop Road. I attended kindergarten and I rode the bus to town with the big kids. Then my parents bought a new home one block from the old elementary school and down the road I went. I went to elementary school in Priest River, all except for a partial year in Superior, Mont. My father was a superintendent of a mill there. Then we moved back to Idaho all along keeping our home on Jackson St. They still live there. My parents have been married 57 years. They have done well. I am divorced now and live in Spokane, WA. I love doing what I want to do. After graduation in '67' I attended Lewis Clark Normal School and graduated from their nursing program in '70'. I had a blast and met many wonderful people. I still keep in touch with my buddie Tammy Parkins from Nezperce. They are wonderful people from the prairie. Hard workers. I then started my nursing career at Deaconess and then moved to St. Lukes Memorial Hospital. I worked very hard at learning ALL areas and then married my school pal George Hoiland and had a wonderful daughter, Heather Lyn. I divorced George in 80 and then remarried a local man then divorced and raised Heather alone from 85 to 97. I spent my professional time in management...i.e. head nurse of surgical orthopoedics, shift supervisor, charge nurse of surgical floor, staff development coord., Assistant Director Nursing Services and then Director. I finalized my career by teaching nursing. I even had a lengthy stint as an RN Consultant Councilor at a local private Psych/CD hos...Expand for more
pital. I knew a lot about that being married to an alcoholic. That was very HEALTHY for me. I saw what they went through and learned the addiction game. I learned that I am not an enabler and not co-dependent and did not want to play the game. After I experienced the hurtful "empty nest" syndrome I married a guy from Indiana. We lived in Ohio and later moved out here and bought 5 acres and we designed our new construction. I learned that I do not like controllers and I lost a lot of money and assets. So..........I am alone and I am blessed. Smart woman/foolish choices. You cannot take it with you....besides I am still 26 I have plenty of time. My daughter moved up here after 4 hurricanes and is now working and living with me. She still gets nervous if I should buy bottled water or duct tape. hahaha... I travel a lot. I went to AK with my bush pilot friend in 02, then back surgery, FL for a month in 03, then a total lt hip with a block, and recouped in 04. I just got back from New Mexico and stayed in a 300K "earthship". Life is getting better every day. I am secretary of my church council and I volunteer out of the office of the American Lung Assosciation. I have gone through HECK with chronic pain with these skeletal issues. Dr. Hurley once told me that nursing is surely considered a career equal to heavy construction with massive wear and tear on the body. I instructed and used good 'body mechanics' but it was all a matter of time....I am now very content with my life and myself. I date and always keep busy. So...I did become a successful nurse, I did travel and this happiness thing is overrated... I wish you all well. Take care and God Bless....Colleen :)
