Conrad A.'s Story

Life After graduating in 1973 I went to work at Rohm & Haas in August of 73. Married a girl I met in my Junior year at Cape Fear (Carolyn Price) in January, 1974. We had 2 sons one in 75 and the other in 77. When Rohm & Haas sold to Monsanto I continued making polyester yarn with Monsanto. In 1978 when Monsanto sold part of the plant out I remained with Monsanto and the Roundup Herbicide plant was started up in ~1980. Monsanto announced the shut down of the Fayetteville plant in Sept 2001. The Roundup plant was shut down by the end of 2001 and it and most of the unused building were torn down by 2nd qtr. of 2003. The utilities plant remained running to supply neighboring plants. I remained there throughout and on 12/19/2003 DAK Americas purchased the plantsite and I along with 17 other hourly folks were hired by DAK to continue running the plant. I am still married to the same wonderful lady and we now have a dauthter-in-law and a grandaughter who, of course, is the "apple of our eye". Since I last posted the previous paragraph we now have a grandson by our oldest son. He is 4 yrs old now. He is all boy and quite full of vim and vigor. School I always liked school in my elementary years and was a good student, making good grades in everything except writing/penmanship. I really liked all my teachers in grades 1-6, especially, Mrs. Wood - 4th grade and Mrs. Maness - 5th grade. We moved from Fayetteville to Beaver Dam the summer before I went into the 7th grade. Beaver Dam was a great school. I'll admit I did not care much for my teacher there but she was OK. I went to Stedman for 8th & 9th grades. In the 8th grade it was still a senior high school but in the 9th it changed to a middle school (7th, 8th & 9th grades). I had mostly very good teachers there. Miss Hall was very strict but a very good teacher. I liked Mr. Royal- maybe because I liked Algebra so good. He seemed to make it so easy to understand. Mr. Barnes and Mrs Cromartie stand out in my memory favorably also. I think though I started liking school less and less the further up in grades that I got. At Cape Fear I really was not too happy with school. Too many people!! I just don't think making schools bigger makes them better. You lose that personal touch. My grades slacked somewhat in high school because of my attitude toward school. I drove a school bus for 2 years. I think that was the thing I enjoyed the most about high school except for the fact that I met my wife to-be in the 11th grade. I tried out for football but wimped out after one week of barning tobacco all day and going to practice at night. I had pretty good teachers in hi...Expand for more
gh school. Mr. Byrd- Geometry, Mrs Haggler-History, Mrs. Joyner-English, Mr Rinaldi-Spanish and Mrs. Barret-Chemistry stand out in my memory the most. Workplace I have spent all the past years since 1973, when I graduated high school, at a plant site located on Cedar Creek Rd. in Fayetteville, N.C. It was Rohm and Haas first and then on 1/1/1978 Monsanto took it over. It was all polyester and nylon yarn production until 1981 when Monsanto got out of the yarn business in Fayetteville and started making Roundup Herbicide. I am still there as of 12/31/2002- still with Monsanto but we are on the selling block. We supply utilities to neighboring plants now. Of course I am in hopes that a future buyer will come in and start up some other type of operation and fill the parking lot with employees once again like it was back in the Rohm & Haas days. I have been very happy to work at this plant. I have grown in knowledge greatly especially when the Roundup production was begun. I have met and worked with many different people since I have been at the plant site - a lot of good and upstanding folks! I've had the opportunity to travel to other countries - Belgium, New Zealand, Australia and Brazil and many trips within the US to St. Louis and a few other places. Since posting the above paragraphs DAK Americas has bought the Monsanto plant and kept me along with ~16 other hourly employees to run the Utility operation. The management style of DAK is quite different than that of Monsanto. There is more hierarchy with DAK. Monsanto had done away with shift supervision back in the early 90's and even did away with day supervision later in the 90's. So far though I still am very satisfied with my job. I really do thank God for my worklife because he has blessed me and my family with a good job with good pay and benefits for a long time. Since posting the above paragraphs my wife and I have separated. A 39+ year marriage shot to #&??. Our sons have been very supportive to both me and their mom. Staying very neutral. I'm still working at DAK. It's Spring of 2017. I am divorced now. I have gotten back into the dating scene after being out of it so long. Hopefully I'll get if figured out before too long. Still working at DAK. I have a granddaughter graduating from Cape Fear this year. Time sure does fly. My family is doing well. It's Jan 1, 2022 today. I lost my oldest son, Jason, on Dec 12,2021. It made for a very sad Christmas but I happy in that I know he is in Heaven with no more problems, health or otherwise, My grandson is living with me now. I pray God helps me to lead, guide and do right by him. He is 16..
