CJ's Story

I have been blessed with a wonderful life, travel, career(s), adventures, family, and friends. If you are reading this, you are one of the reasons I am blessed -- blessed to have known you, spent time with you, shared adventures with you, and suffered through classes (and tests!) with you. I see my experiences -- everyone I knew, every place I visited, everything I did wrong, everything I learned -- as threads that have been woven together into a beautiful tapestry. My wife of 42 years, Susan Jean Murphy Evans, who passed away at dawn on Easter Sunday 2021, and our son, Dylan Quincy Evans, who is now starting his own family, are the two greatest joys of my life. As someone recently told me, old age is earned. That’s definitely true. I am fortunate that I have survived my mistakes (and some of those, only barely). So, what have I done since high school? Let's see: -- College (San Jose State University, CA) -- Newspaper reporter (San Jose Mercury-News) -- Vagabond/traveler: 22 countries in Europe -- Brief sojourn living and working in Paris -- 6-month end-to-end trek through the Alps (sponsors: The North Face, Levi-Strauss, Chapstick, Vermont Tubbs snowshoes, Fabiano Boots) -- Mountain tour leader (Chamonix-Zermatt, worst July weather in a century!) -- Editor, Backpacker Magazine (NYC and Bedford Hills, NY) -- Author, seven-book series, “On Foot Through Europe,” William Morrow & Company, NY, NY, working from a base in Wetzikon, Switzerland -- Executive Director, American Hiking Society; Deputy Executive Director, Population-Environment Balance; Executive Director, The WalkWays Center; Senior Advisor, initiator of state farmland protection programs in Florida and Kentucky, American Farmland Trust, Washington, DC -- Founder, Executive Director, Florida Stewardship Foundation and Stewardship America, Boca Raton and Naples, FL -- Author of multiple economic and fiscal impact studies demonstrating the value of renewable energy projects to communities and showing that agriculture, open space, and natural resources more than pay their way and increase property values -- Registered lobbyist 40+ years (one of the good guys, I like to think) -- At the local level: involved in the approval of local policies and bond issues that provide incentives to private landowners to maintain productive farmland and endangered species habitats, along with model programs to develop “created wetlands” for wastewater treatment in lieu of typical wastewater treatment facilities, which have become bird sanctuaries, havens for wildlife, and major tourist attractions for the counties in which they are located -- At the state level: crafted grant programs to attract clean energy projects to states and land u...Expand for more
se policies that allow all landowners in an area to benefit from the economic returns generated by development, without creating winners and losers, while using development as the engine to protect high priority habitats and natural areas -- One of these programs, the Florida Rural Lands Stewardship Program, was created in cooperation with private landowners, state agencies, and environmentalists in a project I created and led, which was encompassed in Florida State law in 2002, providing permanent protection of priority one habitats for the endangered Florida Panther, whose numbers have since increased from fewer than 30 to more than 250 -- At the federal level: crafted legislation that created the National Recreation Trails system, allowed abandoned railways to be converted to trails (Rails-to-Trails), created conservation and energy title programs in the 2008 Farm Bill, and established grant and loan guarantee programs at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Department of Energy (DOE) that support the development and commercialization of first-of-their-kind bioeconomy technologies -- Saved the DOE Title 17 Innovative Technologies Loan Guarantee Program from having its loan authority eliminated in 2017 (this is the program that gave Tesla and the Nissan Leaf their start, financed the development of Ford’s EcoBoost engines, and funded the nation’s first utility-scale wind and solar projects) -- Drafted legislation enacted in 2020 that has fixed problems and given new life to the DOE’s Title 17 program which, after its initial successes, had bogged down and not been able to complete a single loan guarantee from 2014-2021; it now has more than $80 billion of projects in its pipeline and going to closing -- Co-founded a Washington, DC advocacy (i.e., lobbying) group in 2018, the Alternative Fuels & Chemicals Coalition, which now has over 150 member companies that employ more than 600,000 people and generate in excess of $200 billion per year, which has been able to restore more than $40 billion per year in proposed cuts and save nearly a dozen federal programs threatened with elimination that support alternative fuels, renewable chemicals, biobased products, sustainable aviation fuels, and the bioeconomy -- Currently head up a holding company, American Diversified Enterprises with nine companies organized into six business groups – consulting, financing, 3rd party studies and due diligence, media, environment and agriculture, and innovative project development – along with three strategic collaborations, including the Alternative Fuels & Chemicals Coalition, and a foundation to carry on my wife’s 50-year career of helping the needy, the Susan Jean Murphy Evans Living Legacy Fund.
