Craig's Story

May 2007 Hello Scott Collegiate Classmates: Graduated from U of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon) in 1966 - Commerce in accounting. Worked in Toronto with Chartered Accountant firm Arthur Andersen & Co until 1970, transferred to AA&Co's Minneapolis office. Took a position with an AA&Co client Apache Corp in 1972 and lived in Minneapolis until 1974. Then grew tired of traveling with young children at home and took current position as University Auditor with Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. Married since 1964 to Jean (Guerin), who graduated from Sheldon Collegiate in Regina. We have two children: - Lisa ('69) lives in Scottsdale, AZ - husband Scott, two daughters Ashley ('02) & Ava ('06), and - Jay ('72) lives in Flagstaff, AZ - Sergeant with Arizona Highway Patrol, wife Trish, one daughter Audrey ('04) and one son Andrew ('07). My wife Jean was a social worker for the State of Arizona and retired in 2001. We enjoy good health, as far as we know, and stay active. Both Jean and I have family in Sask and visit once or twice a year - four times last year including a wedding and a funeral. My hobbies are spending time with our 4 grandchildren (babysitting/shuttling to pre-school here in Flagstaff during the week and weekend activities in Scottsdale/Phoenix) and hunting, often with our son Jay (on the good out-of-state hunts) but we both have our separate hunting buddies too. After I retire, probably in July 2012 or 2013, we will live full-time in Scottsdale. ----------------------------- March 2014 I am pulling the plug at work in Flagstaff at the end of June. I have been spending two & three week blocks of time this winter in Scottsdale and so am getting comfortable with the idea of being retired. Our granddaughters 8 & 11 attend a charter school and Jean & I switch off picking them up after school and checking homework. ----------------------------- January 2015 I have settled pretty well into retirement. I spend a few hours each morning at a nearby health club/gym, where I spin 4x a week. We pick up g-children from school and check homework. We occasionally travel to Flagstaff to help out with the g-kids there and they spend some time with us on their summer break and we travel with them on their Spring break. I seem to stay busy and always have something to look forward to. We travel some in the summer and school Fall break with our 2 Phoenix g-daughters to get out of the Phoenix summer heat. Our daughter Lisa joins us for portions of trips due to her limited vacation/holiday time. We get to SK a couple of times a year, not as often as we used to, now that our parents are all deceased. Sadly, more of the trips now are for funerals. We are booked to Saskatoon with the same g-daughters and Lisa this July, for my nephew's wedding and to see relatives who will be at the wedding and in Regina. We have SK, AB & ON relatives visiting here, over Christmas and during January and February. My sister Carol, who lives in Atlanta, owns a house across the street from us, and she doesn't use it much, so relatives stay there. Carol immigrated to the US on a nurse's work Visa, then married a US citizen. We made the transition to US Medicare. We got on with the Mayo Clinic here in Scottsdale, just Primary Care Physicians at present, but Mayo encourages you to get all your health care there, so we will be weaned from other doctors. Our daughter-in-law Trish graduated as a Nurse Practitioner and is working in "critical care" at the Flagstaff hospital, making "rounds" to check on patients. She also assists with heart operations. NP's in Arizona can write prescriptions. I hope to hear from some of you. My address is Craig dot Hutton at NAU dot EDU. Craig ----------------------- May 2024 Jean & I are still enjoying retirement after almost 10 years. We sold the Flagstaff house and live full-time in Scottsdale. We both belong to Lifetime Fitness, locations nationwide and in Toronto. Life events that the RainMan would have written in his book of important events: 2016 I was rear-ended at a freeway offramp stop sign by a large tire truck. The vehicle was in the body shop for 3 months. Lot of PT, ablation of lower back nerves. Financial settlement barely paid for all massages, $22K in PT, doctor bills, but the attorney came out well financially 2017 I had prostate cancer...Expand for more
, treated with prostatectomy. Our Dad died of it, both my brothers have had it. 2022 cancer came back. Underwent two different sets of radiation treatments at the Mayo Clinic. I have had 3 "PSMA PET Scans" where they inject you with radioactive fluid and the fluid seeks out and attaches to the cancer and where the cancer is shows on imaging. My cancer is now in medicated remission, PSA reading "undetectable". I'll die of something else. 2024 I had a CT coronary scan and my calcium score was off the charts. Mayo did nuclear imaging and a nuclear stress test, which showed no artery blockages or narrowing. The Cardiologist explained that high calcified plaque is not a problem unless it causes blockage or narrowing in the coronary arteries. They doubled my Lipitor med to 80 mg daily to try to avoid future calcium buildup. G-dau Audrey is just finishing her first year at the University of Montana in Bozeman. G-dau Ava will start her first year this Fall at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. Almost $100K cost of attendance for a year is shocking and that needs to be worked out. We have been to the Pepperdine campus twice, both times experiencing the mass of humanity in CA with stop and go freeway traffic. Ava won't have to deal with that, she has to live in a dorm for the first two years, Pepperdine is a closed religious campus, strict rules, No protests allowed like the Arizona universities with pepper spray and rubber bullets flying around. I'm shocked at the price of tuition, compared to the $200/full year we paid at U of S in the 1960s. G-dau Ashley is currently in an 11-month hairdressing school. She works part-time at an salon in Scottsdale where they charge $90 for a haircut and $250 & up for a cut & color. They also do hair extensions. She'll might become the high earner among the g-children. G-son Andrew will be a senior in high school this Fall. We spend a month each summer in Honolulu at the Hilton Hawaiian Village to escape this brutal Phoenix heat. Daughter Lisa and g-daughters Ashley & Ava join us and Audrey and Andrew have joined us a couple of times as well, but they mostly travel with their parents. They were in Maui just before the terrible fire. We also do three trips during the summer to Carlsbad, CA, just north of San Diego, where it is much cooler than Phoenix. Carlsbad temperatures are often 20-30 degrees F cooler than Phoenix. Dau-in-law Trisha still works as a Nurse Practitioner at the Flagstaff Hospital and does 24/7 for 10 straight days each month. She also does contract work at hospitals in Phoenix. Jean and I both drew bull elk muzzleloader tags in AZ. Jean transferred her October tag to Andrew and I need to dig out some warm clothes for my one-week hunt near Flagstaff in November. We installed some "smart-home" devices in the last year, including a surround sound system and 4 exterior Ring cameras. We regularly get Ring video of bobcats, foxes & racoons coming through at night. Other smart home devices we put in: "Flume" water usage monitoring system, "Ting" electrical system monitoring (provided by State Farm insurance company), "Eero" Wi-Fi enhancers, "Hunter HydraWise" Wi-Fi irrigation controller that adjusts irrigation based on communication with a nearby weather tower, smart speakers that play any music or radio station upon verbal request & smart plugs (Alexa, turn on/off Xmas tree (lights)), remote AC/heat control with "TraneHome" app. If the Ring app sounds on my cellphone to indicate that someone is at the front door, we can ask Alexa to "show front door" on either the TV screen or Amazon Echo Show 10" screen. Amazon Echo Dots replaced the clock radios and you can ask Alexa to wake you, or to remind you of something in the future, or to play sleep sounds to put you to sleep. We had a Maytag W&D set that sent you texts when your clothes were clean/dry, but the Maytag washer was too rough on the clothes so we returned then and got LG brand W&D with no text alerts Last 'significant event', I had cataract surgery and eye-drain opening stretching (to relieve pressure for the beginning signs of glaucoma) on my right eye 3 weeks ago. I am amazed at the yellow/creamy color white appears to be from my uncorrected left eye vs how vividly white white objects appear from the right, corrected eye. I'll get the left eye done soon.
