Craig's Story

As you can see from my photos, I got to be what I wanted to be "when I grew up". In my early teens I began to develop an interest in a career in law enforcement and I decided that I wanted to become a state trooper. At first, I thought I would try to become a trooper in New York State, having been born and raised on Long Island. That was where I attended Cherrywood School, Salk J.H.S. and MacArthur H.S. in Wantagh/Levittown. Between my junior and senior years in high school, my family moved to Oakland, N.J. where I graduated from Indian Hills H.S. in June, 1973. I started college at William Paterson, thinking that I would try to become a New Jersey State Trooper, but another family move was in the works. My Dad worked for Johns-Manville and the company decided to relocate their headquarters to Colorado. My family moved to Littleton, Colorado in January 1974, but I stayed behind to finish a full year at William Paterson. I transferred to Metropolitan State College in Denver. I also discovered that I could meet the requirements to become a Colorado State Patrolman (the title of trooper wasn't adopted until shortly after I joined). So, I set my sights on joining the Colorado State Patrol. I went to school during the summers of 1975 and 1976 and was able to graduate half a year early. I first applied during the summer of 1976 when I turned 21 and the Patrol lowered the starting age limit from 23 to 21. I just missed getting into a training class in January 1977. In the meantime, I went to work for Burlington Northern Railroad and the Colorado & Southern Railway at various jobs in Gillette, Wyoming and Denver. The State Patrol began accepting applications in the spring of 1978, so I applied again and was accepted to recruit class 78-2 that began October 16, 1978. I graduated the following January and I was assigned to Idaho Springs on I-70 west of Denver. About a year later, I met my future wife, Diann. She was a dispatcher for the Patrol and she had transferred from Craig, Colorado to Denver. Things worked out well and we were married in May, 1981. A year later, I was able to transfer home to Littleton and we bought our first house in southwest Denver. I worked the area south of Denver for several years and then transferred to the Operational Development Section at Patrol headquarters. Al...Expand for more
ong the way, we had two children. Our son, Andrew (Andy) was born January 19, 1983 and our daughter, Kate was born five years and one day later. Both kids are out on their own and doing well. In August 1989, I was promoted to sergeant and we moved to Fort Lupton, about half way between Denver and Greeley. I was a field supervisor there until November, 2001 when I transferred back to headquarters in the Public Affairs Unit. I commuted to west Denver, because we didn't want to move until the kids finished high school. Although I very much enjoyed my career as a state trooper, I had another dream. I wanted to go back to railroading and in the spring of 2005, Union Pacific Railroad was hiring for train service positions in Denver. I was going to be eligible to retire from the Patrol on July 1st, so I applied and was accepted for the training class. It was another great adventure, running real trains, but I was away much of the time and I realized that wasn't the way I wanted to work and live, and so I reluctantly left. I needed to keep working, so I worked for Budget and Avis at Denver International Airport for several months until a new Ace Hardware store opened in Fort Lupton. Diann and I both applied there and we were both hired. We both enjoy it and it's fun seeing our neighbors so frequently. Last summer, I was asked to go back to work for the Patrol at the Academy doing the evidence photo processing on a temporary basis for six months, two days a week, and I continued the hardware job four days a week. It was great to see many of my old friends, but many of them have since retired also. I'm waiting to hear if they want me back this August. Kate is currently filling the position and she really enjoys it. For fun, I continue to work on model trains, collect pocket knives, fix things around the house and ride my old 1985 Harley Sport Glide. A number of years ago I bought a 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner (my favorite car from my youth) to restore and I'm hoping to start working on it finally. Anyway, that's my story. I'm looking forward to new adventures and hopefully seeing some of you again in the future. Craig November 2009 Since I wrote the original story, I was called back to the CSP photo lab for one more six month temporary job. I now work full time again at our local Ace Hardware.
