Only 7.5 minutes to the beach, Sea World, and the zoo. 45 minutes to Julian and the same to Viejas Outlet Mall. Love to just walk around. In the Fall of 1998 I had a major heart attack ending with 5-way bypass surgery. I was out of teaching for 10 weeks. Returned to teaching feeling just fine. In the year 2005, my cardiologist would not tell me why, but he implanted a pacer and defibulator in me. At this time I had moved on to teaching at San Bernardino High School. Early in the morning in 2007 I felt an Earthquake. I asked my daughter and she denied it. Within minutes I felt a 2nd. I hollered to my wife. I had never felt the defibulator before. Third time it hit I was out. Most people do not realize that a great many of our organs try to repair themselves. During my heart attack the back of my heart was damaged and was trying to repair itself. This is the electrical portion of the heart. I do not remember any of what came later except what I was told. I was in V-tach, heart racing over 200 beats per minute. Riverside Hospital could not handle it. I was to be Life Flighted to Good SAMs in LA. It was too foggy and they waited 10 hours, still no go. Apparently Good Sams got tired of waiting and sent an ambulance with cardiologist and cardiac care nurse. The Dr. Had been waiting for me at Good Sams. I needed an ablation which is a line right to the heart and attempts are made to break through electrical lines in the heart. I was not expected to live through the night. My wife and daughter were asked to remain close. The hospital put them up at the Omni down the street. I was told Dr. David Cannom. world renown cardio physiologist, walked in and saw I was still alive and saw how stubborn I was and he went to work. Three days later I was supposed to home until the V- tach hit again. I guess at one point one of VPs came to see me and went back to school relating that I would not make it. I know she meant well. Twenty + days later while I was still in the hospital while once again I noticed my left leg had grown huge and w...Expand for more
as blue/green. The nurses shoved me back into my room and bed. I had a blood clot thick as a piece of rope. Gave me blood thinners and sucked it out and in three days headed home. I am remembered at Good SAMs. I must have been watching some tv show. Apparently a character must have been climbing the side of a business building. Nobody was with me! Apparently I dialed 911 and relayed what I saw. Hospital employees became very scared as apparently 15-20 LAPD cars drove up and officers got out some with their guns drawn and some locking down the entire hospital. They finally traced the 911 call to my room. To calm me down the hospital had their security guard come up to my room with gun and badge to show me all was secured. My doctor wrote a paper to formally present to Hospital Board and share with up and coming doctors at USC. My name was not used so no royalties. When I returned to SBHS for the next 10 school days I had different administrators checking on me 3-4 times a day. About 6 months after this school security was having problems keeping our students in school and not ditch classes. As teachers we decided to help. During our prep period we traveled the school to get them back in class. A month later security and I broke up a fight between two male seniors. I ended up hurting my right leg. It seemed to be okay. I limped on it for a week or so. Now guy fights I like much better than ladies. Guys usually pop each other about 4X each. Ladies Holy Geez. My final fight was between 2 girls over a guy. How stupid!! Security and I broke my last fight up. The girls had each other by the hair. Now girls will not willingly let go. I had one lady and security had the other one. With their hands in each other's hair and pulling, we had them 4 feet off the ground stretched out between us. We lowered them slowly. All of a sudden a sharp pain shot up my knee. I was forced by school admin. To go to workers comp. After about 2 years later and seeing a knee surgeon, and a back surgeon I was sent out for a second opinion. He took x-rays and I was bone on bone in both hips. He too is world renown and developed his own surgical table. Even here in Sacramento the ortho. Drs. Playfully bow to him. I had been walking with a walker and cane. My wife got real pissed when she found out prior to surgery I was using my cane to press the accelerator and left foot to brake. My daughter ratted me out. Three days after surgery I was up and walking out of the hospital. After 4 more heart ablations and dying on the last one both my cardiologist and cardiophysiologist made me promise not to teach more than a total of 25 years. I did not realize, my cardiologist made my last appointment on the last day of school of my 25th years. When I saw him he reminded me of my promise. He gave me a choice- I could retire as I had promised or he was going to write to the district telling them I was unable physically to manage a classroom. So here I sit retired, very unhappy but knowing in reality knowing I had three doctors that were family and cared. Dr. Gary Marais cardiologist Dr. David Cannom cardiophysiologist and Dr. Joel Matta orthopedic hip replacement.
