Cyndi's Story

Life After Graduation, I continued to run my brother's business, Tasty Treat on Rt. 38 (The old Tastee Freeze) until I became a mail carrier in Lombard. After one very hot summer & the untimely death of my father in late August of 1970, I went on to a few other interesting jobs until I married in '71. I was blessed with 2 girls. Alyssa was born 6/8/72 & Amy, on my dad's birthday, 2/11/76. Even though they never met, it amazes me how much like my father Amy has become over the years. Anyway, having married as a way to get out of the house, I realized my mistake, gave my husband the choice to grow up & stay with me as a responsible husband & father, or leave & carry on as the stoned, useless, & spoiled child who wanted nothing but drugs, a harem, & a life of leisure. After several years of "getting his head together" (lol), we divorced, & I married a terrific man! By marrying Michael, I gained a step-son, Zak, & was able to quit my 3 jobs to enjoy life as a spoiled wife. Our children have blessed us with 6 grandchildren. Amy & her husband Shane Collins have two boys who love to spend time with us. As babies we cared for them as often as possible, & now that they're older, they are often here for visits to spend some time with us, & the rest of the time racing their quads & dirt bikes through the woods & creek. Austin has his own truck that he rebuilt with his dad & will finally get his license this year on his 16th birthday. He was born Nov, 5th, 1998. His brother Travis is not far behind, as he was born on July 8th, 2000 & just turned 14. Along with their ability to drive any & every vehicle they can get their hands on, they are both Champion Wrestlers although they seem to excel at any sport they've tried. Coaches always beg them to return since beyond their obvious talent & strength, they actually pay attention which is rare in most kids these days. But their love of Wrestling stems from their dad, who was a State Champion Wrestler in High School himself. Unfortunately, Alyssa is more her father's girl, so we don't see her anymore. My beautiful, smart, & amazing daughter has become more like her biological father every day. Although she works in the Medical field, does not have her "Dream Job" as a Helicopter Paramedic. Her 1st husband derailed her plans for his own. Since her divorce & remarriage, she was able though, to return to school to become a technician in the field of nuclear medicine & works at Valley West Hospital. At least she was able to pursue part of her dream. I'm proud of her for that accomplishment even though she was denied her 1st choice. With her 1st husband, she had a son, Wyatt, who was born April 19th, 2000. He has a little brother, Will, born 6 years later on Aug 7th to Alyssa & new husband Dave Losselyoung. The 2 other Grandchildren we see besides Austin & Travis are the children of Zak & his wife Kelly who brought Sullivan into our world on Sept 11th, 2006. The addition of Mallory brought to us a bit early, gave Sully a sister. She was due in Feb of 2009, but arrived on Dec 18th, 2008. A great surprise on her dad's birthday. She is fine though, and we are all thrilled. Now, back to me & what I've been up to... Hmmm... We moved from West Chicago, my 1st husband's home town, in the fall of 1978 to the Kaneville, Elburn, Sugar Grove area. And, on to Sandwich with my 2nd husband in 1986 to be closer to his work. Then, in 1992, Michael, daughter Amy, & I bought 10 acres SW of Sandwich in the middle of corn & bean fields & built a log cabin. It's SE of Leland & SW of Somonauk, so even after all these years I'm still in the area, just a little to the southwest. I am partially disabled now, but before that happened, before the age of 42, when I was still healthy & strong, I had an Antique & Collectables Mall in Sandwich. We still have an inventory because we keep adding to it, so if you like antiques, collectables, or just junk, please let me know. And if you're looking for something in particular, If we don't have it we can probably find it for you. Prices are really cheap & everything must go! We still love to travel & attend many auctions & seem to sell most of our items to other dealers. One of our favorite "Sales" is "More On 34", a Flea Market/Garage Sale of buying & selling Antiques, Collectables, & Garage Sale items that is always on Father's Day weekend. It's Friday afternoon & evening, & all day on Saturday with some starting as early as 5AM! It covers many miles of Rt. 34 (Ogden Ave.) from the western part of IL in Galesburg, east through the Plano & Yorkville area, Oswego, & sometimes all the way to Naperville & even Downer's Grove. My husband Michael along with another driver bought Tri-County Concrete, Inc. in Sandwich. (This was also in '92 when we were living in a mobile home on our property & had just started building our cabin. Hey, when we go into debt, we don't fool around!) We sell to, talk to & just see & meet all kinds of wonderful people! Take a ride next June. You'll have a great time, find numerous bargains, & if you make it to Sandwich & I'm able to be there, I hope to see you! It would be wonderful to see some old friends & acquaintances from GBW! Oh, I mentioned 42 as the year I fell apart! I was lucky enough to be able to do a lot of traveling & see most of the US before I fell apart Since Mike works mostly in warm weather, we do our traveling in the Winter. Usually January & February, when it's beautiful weather in the south! Our all time favorite city is New Orleans! San Antonio is a close 2nd, but we really love LA! The people in Louisiana will invite you to dinner if they meet you & you don't already have plans! Can you imagine that happening in GE? Glen Ellyn has a reput...Expand for more
ation for the home of the most snobbish people in the US! I've heard that from people all over! Not everyone is that way, but the reputation still exists. NOLA is my favorite city in spite of it's crime, homeless people, crazy drinking, etc. Bourbon St. alone has as many strip joints & illegal anything going on than Chicago or New York. And it's only a few blocks long! But in the French Quarter, everyone thinks about it's great restaurants & wonderful music along with the trashy side of things. There is so much more in NOLA! There is something for everyone! No matter your age, no matter what you do or don't like! There really is something for everyone! Before my body decided to break down & keep giving me trouble, we travelled all around, from sea to shining sea. But no matter if are 1st destination was Washington DC or Washington State; Vegas to Arizona & New Mexico to Copper Harbor Michigan. managed to spend a few days in New Orleans every year! We never got bored or had any problems. We always were there at the very start of Mardi Gras. Before they closed the best restaurants. When the feeling of Mardi Gras was just beginning but before it was too wild & crazy! We were even able to see 2 parades. Different years, but still we had the feel of the season without the overcrowded, over-drinking, mass of humanity. And it was terrific! If you've never been there before, go stay in the French Quarter in January! Put it on your "Bucket List"! It's more than worth it! Well, I've sure spilled more than enough! So I'll attempt to end this. I don't think it will be too long before we have a big auction to sell everything. I think we're also looking at selling the house. It's really getting too much for my husband to handle alone. Amy wants to buy it, but I don't think we'll make it for another 4 years. she wants to stay in Yorkville until the boys graduate from HS. The house & big red barn (it's really the garage, but it's 2 stories & is about a 2 1/2 car with an extra room on one side. there are also 4 automatic doors. you can pull in 1 side & go out the other!) Anyway, it's on ten acres with woods, the Little Indian creek & is just beautiful if you can get around to keep it up so you can really enjoy it like we used to. The creek is full of all types of fish & there are trails where you can see animals & birds or just sit & enjoy a fire by the creek with friends. Since I don't even go outside anymore unless the kids are here its really wasted on me now. Plus, Mike is looking forward to total retirement. He's partially retired now, but when you're the owner, you can't just walk away. Being disabled, I'm not any help with the house or yard & spend as much time as possible with my wonderful Grandchildren. We play every type of game, watch TV, & movies. I have tons of DVDs & between us we have all the electronic or online game types. I spend almost all my time on the computer & was working on our Family Tree for several years. It's quite a project! Being disabled, we no longer travel as we used to. I used to play stupid games on Facebook, but now I just share photos, articles, & ideas with friends & try to keep up with Amy's family! They are always on the go! They have even brought friends here to play with there "Big Boy Toys" in the woods & creek. At least 1 weekend, everyone is coming here instead of the nearby campground! I can't wait! Lately the campground owner has turned into a stalker. Plus, it costs $8. each just to visit campers for a few hours. We don't swim or use any facilities, we just sit & talk. $8? Forget it!! I would love to hear from more old school friends. I'm on the Glenbard West Class of '69, the Glen Ellyn, and Wagner School Remembered sites. In the last few years, too many from our class have passed away. I lost a really good & long time friend when Peggy Schmidt Shopinski passed. She lived only a few miles from me & we had been in touch regularly even when she lived in St. Louis. I really miss her a lot. We had been friends since 6th grade! And do to illness, I couldn't even attend her service or see her mom & Kari & David, her sister & brother. I really feel like I let her down! Well, back to basics here... If anyone is interested in getting in touch with me, you can find me on Facebook listed as Cyndi Pulse Zerby. I'd love to hear from you! I no longer have a membership to Classmates so I can't see who has visited or left a message here. SCHOOL I started my education at tiny little Wagner School District #89. Everyone knew each other, but being in the country, it was hard to have friends come to play. I didn't have a friend within walking distance until 3rd grade. For fifth grade, some of us were bussed to Arbor View while Glen Crest Jr High was built. I spent 6th, 7th, & 8th grade at Glen Crest. High school at Glenbard West was a whole new world because most of the other students were from Glen Ellyn Jr. High. You all new each other, but didn't know us. It was scary at first, but some great & lasting friendships began at Glenbard. I also had the unique experience of attending the same high school as my parents. Some of their teachers were still working and remembered them well. It was a hard act to follow! The HS Choir was terrific at Glenbard & I'm proud to have been a member of Choir and the Ensembles. Which reminds me that I'm also on the "GBW Choir" site & the "I sang for Dr. Whitecotton" site on Facebook. When I told my daughter Amy about Glenbard West when we moved out here, she was really amazed. Her high school graduating class was a whopping 28 kids compared to Glenbard's Class of ??? I don't even remember! (Old age?) I hope I see or hear from more classmates (but on Facebook) soon!
