Cyndy's Story

School My life since I was in school. Okay, since I added many communities, I'll start there. I attended Eberwhite Elementary School in Ann Arbor, MI. I moved when I was 9 years old to Saginaw, MI. I attended Arrowwood Elementary School and then Chippewa Middle School. I attended Douglas MacArthur HS and graduated in 1986. I went on to attned Wartburg College in IA for one year. I took a year off and returned to complete my education a year later. I attended Valparaiso University and got my Bachelor's Degree in Social Work. I graduated December of 1991. I have done a few college courses in computer technology since then, but no further degrees. Workplace After graudationg with a degree in Social Work, I wasn't really certain what jobs I was now qualified for. I had two excellant internships in college that both turned into full time positions. The first one was at a place called "The Family House". They were a place that non-custodial parents could visit with their children under light to full supervision. I created a program for parents who had court ordered weekend visits and no place to "exchange" their kids and the child's belongings. We got the clientele from the court and they paid $1 for the service. It was designed to avoid having the local McDonald's or Burger King become the place that parents met to "trade kids" for the weekend. The other internship that became a job was at a place called Christian Haven Homes. It was a ranch, designed after the idea of Boys Town, for troubled teenaged boys. I moved from Valparaiso to New Castle IN and worked at Community Mental Health Parnters. It was a great place to work, but it was only part-time. Shortly after, I began working at Marion County Dept. of Child and Family Services. I started as a benefits caseworker and then transferred to become a Child Protective Services worker. I met my husband and moved out to Colorado and worked as a Child Protective Services worker for five years there. 10 collectively :) Since then, I have been "semi-retired" due to infertility and burn out. I am hoping to return to the workforce soon. Military I, personall...Expand for more
y, have never been "in the military", but since I was engaged to two soldiers, I felt I should add a bit. I was first engaged to a college sweetheart right before he deployed to "Desert Storm". It was very tough being in my senior year of college and wondering if I was ready to get married and "follow a soldier around". I decided that I wasn't ready, and when he returned we called off the engagement. After that, we actually ended up getting back together and lived together for a few years. Needless to say, should've stuck with the first decision to end it. Live and learn. The next military guy that I met I met on-line. We just hit it off from the first time we started talking. I was interested in moving to Colorado, (my family had often visited there and my best friend lived there), so when he mentioned that that was where he was stationed, I was interested. He was at Ft. Carson with 10th Group, (they are an Airborne Unit who supports Special Forces). He does jump out of airplanes. In fact, when I met him I asked him why he owuld jump out of a "perfectly good airplane" and his reply was that the Army doesn't supply them with "perfectly good airplanes". If you've ever been in a C130 you know what I mean. I have stood near one- that is plenty. When we first married Jeff was part of 10th Group. He was there for about 5 years before deciding to leave. He wanted to go to Germany, or something "exotic" and they offered him Ft. Bragg in South Carolina. (BTW, Ft. Bragg is NOT exotic). Needless to say, he got out of the service, tried to find a "real" job, and then got back in. He joined the Colorado Army Reserve and National Guard, because he wouldn't have to be moved, (or PCS'd for you military folks), and it was close by. He has been there for the last 5 years. We just really love Colorado Springs and don't want to move unless we pick where we go. He still jumps out of airplanes and he has been deployed a few times. Once to Bosnia and once to New Orleans to assist with Katrina. He might be deploying to Iraq this coming year. We will see. As tough as it can be, I really do enjoy being a military spouse.
