Dr. Cynthia's Story
Life
I worked as an RN from 1977 until 2014. My favorite area was Surgery, where I spent 20 years at St. Joe and Wesley. I also worked OB at Wesley and Oncology at St. Francis in the early days (1972-1978). I stopped playing my violin at age 20 and pursued Nursing which was much more rewarding to me. I further enhanced my mind and resume by completing my BSN (1991) and MSN (1994) at Wichita State U. I met my current husband, Samson, in the Computer Lab. He was running that lab and helped me out on many occasions! So I married him in 1994. I always had the dream of completing a PhD, so I interviewed at KU Med (for Nursing, not Medicine!) and was accepted after a few exams (to make sure I wasn't a total idiot) in 1997. The track I was offered (yeah, no choice) was Statistics, and my minor area was Psychology (a general area). There was a group of us, about 8, who stu...Expand for more
died every Friday evening, most of the day Saturday, and sometime on Sundays at the Med Center to keep our heads above water for the Stat courses (our Major emphasis). I lost 25 lbs and got along with 4-6 hours of sleep each day. I would arrive at KU Med around 8 am and arrive home (a friend's home) around 9 pm every night. Sometimes later. All I did during Spring and Fall break was sleep for about 10 hours, then do homework. I survived and made great friends who will last a lifetime. Now, I miss the mental stimulation that the program generated, and learning more about my topic. However, 20 years ago, everyone had a different opinion on obesity and depression and the effects on males and females. I read when I get the chance after taking care of 3 Scottie dogs at home, gardening, cooking, and cleaning. That is about all for me. I am just taking life easy right now.
