Cynthia's Story

Looking for classmates who have an amateur radio license a motorhome a sailboat and who are interested in traveling by motorhome or who wants to meet in Las Vegas - I love Vegas and flying there for a few days every now and then. I am back at my Florida home now, so anyone coming down this way be sure and contact me and I will be more than happy to meet your for coffee or tea and tell you what I think are the best places to go and see, stay and eat at. Anyone who will let me add them to my file let me know treasurekettle at the yho thingy. THIS IS A LONG STORY, BUT I TOOK TIME TONIGHT to add it here for those who might find it interesting or who is coming to Florida or Alaska. I was the unofficial tour guide for TDY employees who found their selves at the Kennedy Space Center and everyone else they asked for information was too busy to be bothered with them. After helping out who I thought was a regular engineer from Ca. find a better place to stay and home style restaurants, etc.; it turns out he was an Exec. VP of a large aerospace company and asked if I would be a so called tour guide. I said yes, he had his company issue me a credit card and I rented vans and scheduled tours all over the State of Fl for him and his 80 plus employees who came in a week later. I also volunteered to work company picnics and Christmas party¿s, including going out on my own time and buying, then putting up decorations. And yes, doing all the hand writing and special notes on any cards for the boss or his boss on your own time. Their wives were too busy shopping. haha. Plus it was considered beneath them to do to start with. They provided the mailing lists, cards and stamps of course. Starting in the 70's up till the mid 90's I did party invites, thank you cards, holiday cards, their kids graduation, wedding and baby showers, invites, and thank you cards and everything in between. This was before emailing or typed labels were socially acceptable. My director's wife had party's monthly and the guest list was over 500 people. My only demand was that they had to provide me the cards and envelopes no less than a month in advance to give me a week to get them sent out and 2 weeks for them to get the reply¿s so a correct order could be sent to the caterer. Yes I ended up doing all the work with the caterer. But I also got invited to all the party¿s and not like others, I went. Most of the time the secretary¿s got saddled with this chore and hated it but was afraid if they didn't do it their job would suffer. Which was usually true back then. They wanted their free time to hook up with...Expand for more
an engineer to marry or such. I would volunteer to do it for them and they loved me for it. Being out with the company officers and all the so called elite of business society for the city and county and the dreadful politicians ha ha, turned out being fun and the food was always great. No I did not do cleanups. ha ha. At first I did it because I was down right nosey as to who they invited to their party¿s.. I told you I was direct. But after the first party where I had a great time and was asked out on dates by several attorneys and business owners I was hooked. (I never dated anyone with any company I worked for). Believe me, it pays off in the long run. I found out early on in my career that higher ups do keep names in their heads, or in a special little book, good and bad.. ha ha. It dons on you when you get picked to go to all day or week long seminars in and out of town, that someone with the company put your name on the cherished list. Then you quickly figure out, by seeing the others who volunteered are there also; as how you were chosen to go when it was usually only the company elite and sr mrgs and above who usually get to have all the fun. So you keep your mouth shut and let your coworkers wonder why they never get picked, and you just go and have fun. ha ha. THE MORALE OF THIS LONG STORY IS.. Be Nice and Offer Your Friendship and Hospitality to Others new to the area or on company business. Volunteer to help out at company functions or even in your community. Money is not everything and the rewards you reap is usually more than you would have made being paid overtime anyway and you always have fun. If it stops being fun, quit. Smile and make the ones just standing there looking lost and not wanting to be there feel welcome and get them to join in. They are usually there due to the unwritten rule that if they want to go anywhere with their company, they will show up and they will have fun. So I tell them I am not there to kiss behind but to enjoy all the food and drink the hosts paid to kiss behind. That usually gets a laugh out of them. Well except for the few times when you find out it is the hosts older son or daughter from out of town who was forced to be there and you say that about their parents. But It always worked for me as they felt the same way. ha ha. My wonderful parents always told us to be honest, ethical, trustworthy, dependable and help others; so for us, it paid off in all the great friends we have made over the years. My parents were correct = people never forget. And in our cases it has always been for the good deeds we did for our company¿s and others. Thanks Mom and Dad..
