Cynthia's Story
Life
The universe forever changed when the love of my life was born. My daughter, Eryn Alyne, is now eight years old and a constant joy. She marks the best of my defining moments. Everything else pales in comparison. She has given my life purpose and meaning.
At the same time, the death of my 98 year old cousin Elma and my best friend Rosie (Doler) helped form the focus of my being. Elma swam the waters off Guam with Errol Flynn, took a steamer to Italy at the age of 18 and stayed longer than expected after having an affair, she worked on a barge off Brazil, and traveled to Russia when she was 90. Rosie never asked "why me" when confronted by recurring bouts of cancer. Instead she demonstrated true faith, strength and humor.
I will not live a life of regrets.. nor do I want to look back and say "coulda, woulda, shoulda." As a result, don't be surprised to see me on a kayak, white water rafting, inner tubing or climbing a mountain.
I still work in the media. Its been my only job since leaving high school. I'm currently (still) in TV news working at the NBC affiliate in Seattle... but I am also still trying to decide what I want to do when I grow up... and am simultaneously enrolled at the University of Washington aiming for a PhD in educational leadership and policy studies with a focus on indigenous and underrepresented populations and the achievement/access gap.
In the meantime, I think I've put together a few of the puzzle pieces of life. With the help of an oompa-loompa classmate, I now live the life of a true Nagual. The past is the past; I am focused only on the now and hopes for the future.
Relationships
Oh well, what can I say. I am still waiting for Mr. Right. I made the mistake of settling for...Expand for more
a few Mr. Good-enough's...(a few?)... but now refuse to waste time on relationships (romantic or otherwise) that are not encouraging, supportive and reciprocal.
School
Now that we're nearly 30 years past graduation I can look back and say I don't regret much of my high school experience.
Sure, there are some things I would change. I dated some people I wish I'd never met -- and didn't express my feelings for others as I should have. Oh well. Hindsight is usually 20-20.
I wish I had acted out a bit more.. and been less serious. I spent too many nights with my nose in a book and not enough down by the river!
College
I was on the 20 year plan at NMSU. I wasn't active in school since I had to work my way through. The year I graduated I was flying in for exams from San Antonio because Dean Brown threatened to pull my catalog from me and force me to go another 2 years. EEEK.
Oh well- I made it through and I'm glad I did. Yosef Lapid's classes have come in SOOOOOOOOO handy in this post 9-11 world. I'm one of the few in my office that had even heard of Osama Bin Laden much less had a working knowledge of who he is and his background. Thank you Dr. Lapid!!!
I am now pursuing a MEd and EdD at the University of Washington - with a focus on the access gap in education by under-represented populations. I'll be in my 50s by the time I get the degree -- but at least I am chasing a new dream -- of righting some of the historical wrongs committed by teachers/counselors at Gadsden.
Workplace
What a PERFECT job for me. Ask anyone. I get paid to be nosey!
I really do love my job (don't tell my bosses) -- and what I do. I'm still a utopian and believe being in the news media will help make the world a better place.
