Dale's Story

Well, after 28 years in law enforcement I pulled the plug and retired. I am now a pensioner and a rookie in the "grey movement". After College I started off with 2 years working at the Canada/USA border as a Canada Border Services Agency Officer and then completed 26 years of policing starting off with the Delta Municipal Police Department, then with the Matsqui/Abbotsford Police Department. I enjoyed my years in law enforcement and have many good memories, but also have a lot of memories I wish I could forget too. One of my highlights while working at the border was around 1987 or 1988 when David Rossignol and a friend drove up to the booth I was working in at the Douglas Border Crossing on Hwy 99. Dave did not recognize me, but I recognized him. I thoroughly enjoyed questioning Dave and seeing him wiggle in his car seat as I asked him a variety of questions that only someone would have known if they had lived in Smithers and had grown up with him. Poor Dave thought the bloody government had a file on him and had been watching him since he was a teen. Fortunately I introduced myself before Dave had a heart attack. Dave was a good sport and we had a pretty good laugh. One of my highlights in policing is when I had arrested a drunk guy for being "Intoxicated in a Public Place". While booking the drunk into our jail cells he demanded to know why he was being arrested. I told him with a very straight face that he had been arrested for being "Ugly in a Public Place". Of course he started to swear at me and say, "How the F*#* can you arrest me for that. I politely told him to please quit looking at me as he was very ugly and it hurt my eyes to look at him. He then looked at my Sergeant and slurred to the Sergeant in a very loud voice , "He can't F*#* arrest me for that!" The Sergeant with a very straight face told the drunk not to look at him either as h...Expand for more
e was really ugly and hurt the Sergeant's eyes also. Well of course more swearing and cursing came out of the drunk's mouth as we walked him to his jail cell and put him to bed for the night. I often wondered what he told his wife the next morning when she picked him up. I am still laughing as I write this. In case you have forgotten why my nick name was Hobo here are the events as I recall them. When I was 3 years old I ran away from my family down the middle of the railway tracks heading towards Prince Rupert. We were living on Railway Ave back then, between King St and Dominion St, when I decide I could make it on my own and did not need my parent's help any more. Five hours later I had gone as far as Mrs Casler's old cabins, but could not go any further as her dogs came out barking at me. After trading the dogs all my food for a safe passage around them the dang dogs went back on their promise and started barking at me again. It was then that a kind gentleman that lived across the street form Mrs. Casler saw me and thus took me into custody. Apparently I had been reported as missing to the police and a description of me was being broadcast over the BVLD Radio lines. Thus I was apprehended and had my first ride in a police car as the neighbour had ratted me out and called the COPs. Before I would reach the age of 17, I would have two more rides in the back of a police car, one by myself and the other with JJ (Jerry Herman) before I finally convinced the authorities I could drive one by myself and no longer needed to sit in the back where the doors do not open from the inside. Smithers was a lot of fun times and because of the people I went to school with I had a blast. Smithers is one of the highlights of my life and as a result I will always have a fondness for the Bulkley Valley and the people that lived there. Thanks everyone! Hobo Cresswell
