Dale's Story

Well, finally got around to joining this site. Life has been good to me. Right out of high school I learned how to snow ski, moved to Lake Tahoe to become a ski bum and never looked back. I never really made any money, but I definitely made a life for myself. For years I worked enough doing carpentry during the summer to take the winter off and ski opening to closing day at Squaw Valley, usually averaging 120 days a season. That eventually lead to a ski patrol job at Alpine Meadows and finally retiring from professional skiing at Homewood. Intermittently I would make money shooting freelance photography for Powder, Skiing and Sunset Magazine. Along the way, I discovered cross country skiing and finally something that I could excel in. Started to cross country ski race and did quite well at it. At one point ranked in the top 10 for my age group nationally. That led to being invited to ski for the United States Disabled Ski Team as a competitive blind skier guide. As you can imagine, eventually skiing became a job and I decided to do something different and pursue my life's dream. I have always traveled. During the spring while waiting for the snow to melt and for construction to begin I would get out the National Geographic World Atlas, find the most favorable climate and economy for the airline ticket I could afford. As you can imagine, I visited quite a few developing nations. So my dream was to go around the world in one trip seeing as much as possible along the way. I have always been an avid cyclist so I decided why not just ride my bicycle around the world. So the plan unfolded with the woman who is now my wife and in 1990 we took off on the grand adventure. 48 countries, 19,000 miles and 2 years later we returned. (the scariest part of it was, we had no insurance of any typ...Expand for more
e along the way) During this time, my wife to be decided after seeing the true state of the world (living in the USA is sort of comparable to Disneyland to the rest of the world)and decided to expand her exercise physiology degree into a MD degree. So off she went to UC Irvine School of Medicine and to Ventura County Medical Center for her residency. Along the way, I sort of got tired of flying down from Tahoe to see her for 5-10 minutes so I moved back down to Southern California and ended up going back to school for the lack of nothing better to do. 4 years later I graduated Valedictorian from Saddleback College of Nursing. (and I thought I was fortunate to graduate from High School) Sometime during this educational debacle after being together 12 years, Jennifer and I decided to get married. After all as a doctor she was getting medical insurance, as a nurse, I was not. So it made sense to get married so I could get insurance. After being away from Tahoe for 7 years we moved back and bought our first house. After about 9 years of nursing, I burnt out on it. After living the lifestyle I had lived for so long, I could not deal with the stress, administration, unappreciative patients, (hey, the list goes on) and now I just take care of my wife, our two cats (no kids, never wanted them) and our rental properties. My wife is now working as an ER doc in Bishop (yea, yea it is 3 hours away from Tahoe)She goes down for 7-12 days, then we take off for a 2-3 week vacation every month. So, somehow after all these years, I remain semi-retired. My wife and I travel as much as possible during any month we are not able to ski and during ski season you can find us whenever we are not working on some project skiing at Heavenly Valley, Mammoth Mountain or somewhere chasing the powder storms in Utah.
