Dan's Story

Life As of October 2005: After graduating from Sherwood (1978) and Southmount (1979), I attended Trinity College at the University of Toronto. I attended full-time for a year, travelled in Europe and the Middle East for a year, then finished my B.A. on a part-time basis while working in a stationery store in the Eaton Centre. I graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Windsor in 1989, and articled as a Clerk to the Justices of the Ontario Court of Appeal. I was called to the Bar in 1991 and started my career working for the Ontario Legal Aid Plan. From 1994 to 2002, I was Senior Counsel at the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal in Toronto. In 2002, I became Counsel to the Director of Professional Regulation at the Law Society of Upper Canada. I have also served as Acting Manager of Investigations and as Acting Manager of Client Compensation at the Law Society. I have two wonderful children with Joanna Warden, whom I met at university and married in 1983 and from whom I have been very amicably separated since 2003. Emily, born two days before I started law school in 1986, has just finished her first year at the University of Western Ontario, where she is studying Media, Information and Technoculture. Jacob, born in 1992, is finishing Grade 7 Extended French. Joanna and I still own a house in South Etobicoke, but I live in the High Park / Junction neighbourhood of Toronto with my girlfriend, Charla Pearen. Charla has a degree in Psychology and has worked extensively with autistic and other special needs children. She is currently in the B.Ed. program at the OISE/U.of T. Faculty of Education and hopes to qualify eventually as a special ed teacher at the primary/junior level. I am always eager to hear from Sherwood / Southmount graduates, those who've moved away and those who've stayed closer to the Steel City. My pare...Expand for more
nts and two of my three siblings have moved out west, so I have few ties to Hamilton these days, alas. School I had a few crushes in high school, and no success with any of them. I'm sure the girls I liked thought I was pretty creepy and not exactly boyfriend material. With the benefit of considerable hindsight, I can't say I blame them. I was a pretty weird kid and going out with me probably would have meant social death. I was visible though - I joined student council, the choir, the drama club, the newspaper, that sort of thing, and usually took on leadership roles. Being visible and "respected" fed my ego and kept me from being beaten up. I did nothing athletic, of course - actually, the first time I set a purposeful foot in a gym after Grade 8, I was in my forties! Despite my weirdness (or maybe because of it) I was Head Boy (terrible, terrible title!) at Sherwood, and Vice- President at Southmount, losing the presidency there to a guy who did a great Steve Martin impression. I always got good marks and the teachers mostly liked me, but I didn't have many friends, and the friends I did have were even weirder than I was. And that's saying a lot. I was also notable among a certain segment of the Sherwood population for being a "browner" who smoked dope (my secret life revealed!), so I scored a lot of free weed in the doorway behind the gym at lunch time by trading on my supposed innocence. Sorry guys. It was fun to get me stoned, wasn't it? Hehe. Certainly helped to preserve my meager allowance. My favourite teachers were Mr. Gillis (history) and Mr. Spearen (English), but there were lots of others I liked and only a few I couldn't stand. And despite my lack of friends (and especially girlfriends), I actually have pretty fond memories of high school. It was a time when anything seemed possible. You miss that, when you're older.
