Dan's Story

About 3 months after graduation I bought a small house a few blocks north of Lakota JH where I lived until 1984. I met my wife (a 1974 graduate of Stadium HS across Commencement Bay in Tacoma) in early 1981 and got married in Feb 1982. She then moved into that small house where we lived for a couple more years until we moved to a larger home late '84 in south King County. Rented the small house for a couple more years before selling it. Continued full time working at Wigwam in FW until late '77 and finally completed two programs at GRCC in 1980 (an AA Pre-Professional Degree in Accounting and a Bookkeeping Certificate). Went to work for Carter Volkswagen in Ballard in March 1978 so I've marked a 32-year career doing automotive accounting work. A few years later I transferred to Carter Subaru in north Seattle (yes, same owner) as the office manager until 1991. I then located work much closer to home at Younker Nissan in Renton to balance the needs of a wife and young family. I spent about a year doing consulting work as their controller which led to my uncovering 6-digit embezzlement by my predecessor, an 18-year trusted employee of the dealership! After putting together a solidly documented case, the person was charged civilly and criminally and that has been, more or less, one of my claims to fame in my career! I then did more consulting work at Grey Chevrolet in Port Orchard (reverse commute!) as their controller, cleaning up a lot of factory receivables and other things to improve cash flow. Moving to a job closer to home again, I worked for Friendly Chevrolet in Tacoma for a few years before taking on a short-term assignment for Puget Sound Chrysler Plymouth in Renton with accounting office "clean-up" work as a CPA-firm referral. They had their internal turmoil and closed up the business a few years after I was already on to another better job opportunity. Over ten years ago, I began working for Walker's Renton Subaru Mazda (formerly Subaru-Mitsubishi) as the controller. It's probably where I'll retire! As of the time I'm composing this, my oldest is my son who is almost 25. My #2 is my 21-year old daughter who is a freshman at an Oregon college. My youngest is an 11th grader in the Fife School District. The oldest two graduated from Fife HS, even though we're in the FW school district. Both my wife and I had our 10-year class reunions on the same day so, after some agonizing, we agreed to go to mine with the stipulation we had to go to hers next time, if there was a conflict. The 20 year reunion came and, gues...Expand for more
s what? Same night. So we went to hers. For the 30th, she had a schedule conflict so I went by myself to Emerald Downs for FW's reunion. We've known Steve and Elaine Peretti (in Milton) for many years. She is a childhood friend of my wife. He is related to well-known author Frank Peretti. Barb & I were married at Evergreen Bible Chapel where I had been attending church since about my senior year of HS. I served as a deacon and worked with the financial oversight as the treasurer. We later began attending Christ's Church for a few years before becoming involved with a start-up work with Calvary Community Church of Federal Way where I served as one of the elders. For about the last 8 or 9 years we've been attending Calvary Community Church in Sumner (no connection to the FW church) where I've been helping out for a few years now with running a lighting console for 4 services each weekend (Sat/Sun) and sometimes an Easter or Christmas presentation. My wife and I have lived in our present house since 1984 and did a 1000+ SF addition about 10 years ago which we've utilized a lot! We've surpassed our 27th wedding anniversary and are working toward #28. With the right foundation, we've had a good marriage. It's sad to see other marriage relationships succumb to divorce so easily. We said "yes" a few years ago to an opportunity to buy a 22' travel trailer for $500 and have enjoyed a number of camping trips in it with several friends who also have travel trailers! My brothers, Dave and Dale, and my sister Debbie, are still in the area and were also graduates of FWHS in later years. I have coffee or lunch once in a (great) while with Buzz Yohann who works as a detective with the Renton Police Dept. (I hear great positive comments about him whenever I talk to one of his co-workers.) I think he and Cindy hold the title for the longest marriage in our graduating class! Once in awhile I also see Kip DesCombes in Post Falls. Ocassionally, I see Rick (Walt) Prall and Bonnie Anderson. I see Diane Vangundy (Viele) once in awhile but communicate more by e-mail. I sure enjoyed seeing a lot of the class of '74 at the 30-year and 35-year reunion! Both evenings went so fast! It seemed like we needed a 'Part II'! I appreciated Bonnie and others putting together the 50th birthday bash at the Milton Tavern. That was also a fun evening to catch up with folks! I've been in the FW-Auburn area all these years, so please look me up if you're in the area. I'm looking forward to our 40th reunion! Hope to hear from some of you!! Dan Franks
