Dan's Story
How do you pack 25 years into a short little profile story? Well, I guess that I'll just hit the highlights here and save the details for sharing a drink with anyone who is interested.
I've been married for 20 years (to the same central PA girl). We've never had kids, just satisfying that parental instinct thing with a bevy of pets over the years. We've lived in a lot of different places - I guess that I've (still) got restless feet, and probably always will.
Boise,ID was the favorite spot in America, and Haarlem, The Netherlands is hands-down the overall favorite - we've lived here 4 years now and just bought a house, so I guess that maybe we'll stay a while. And for those of you shaking your head and saying to yourself, "The Netherlands? Just outside Amsterdam? Ohhh. I get it. Yep, Dan would fit right in there." Well, it's not what you think. I kicked that habit back in college (it had something to do with that same central PA girl). We moved here for the European lifestyle, and if you can look past the weather, Holland is one of the best lifestyles anywhere that we've been. It also makes it easier on my wife since the Dutch all speak perfect English and she doesn't speak Dutch yet - she works for a German company. I'm working for a Dutch company, so I'm now...Expand for more
pretty close to fluent with the language. We also still have our property in Western Maryland near Deep Creek Lake. It's 400 acres of paradise along the yough river - a remnant of the dot.com days prior to the bust and we still visit a few times a year when I go to see my folks back in Ligonier.
I still don't know how I managed to spend 20 years in the computer field. I've never considered myself a "geek" and remember that my parents got me the motorcycle and my brother the computer when we were kids. I always enjoyed the motorcycle more. In all fairness, I haven't written a piece of code in 10 years and am now on the management side of things. Funny how that works, isn't it?
I did take a sabbatical last year and wrote the great American/Dutch novel. I really enjoyed it and think that writing is my true calling. Now if I could only sell the damned thing!
Well, there you have it. Now you are up to date with the last 25 years of my life! A few more details are on the blog that I keep for friends and family back in America. You are welcome to visit, although for some reason classmates won't let me put the web address in this text. Just google us at dandbhaarlem.
Send me an email and catch me up on your last 25 years.
Cheers/Met vriendelijke groet,
Dan
