Dan's Story

I lived on Paul Springs Road in Hollin Hills. I played Little League in Belle View and Bucknell and attended Hollin Hills, Bryant and, of course, Groovetown (Don't you hate the way we were portrayed as a lily white football powerhouse in Remember the Titans? What a work of fiction!). Even then I was protesting the VN war and my sister took me to see Dr. King in '63. Some of you may remember that I instigated a walk out to support one of the Moratoriums, not a bad excuse to get out of school! After being the escort to our GHS Homecoming Queen, Julie Weintraub, I graduated a year early and went to Indiana University. At IU, I lived in Foster Quad, the Phi Psi house, Colonial Crest and some other apartments. After my tumultuous HS years and activities in DC, Indiana was a bit like being a foreign exchange student for 4 years. It was a fascinating eye- opening experience and I still have have many great friends from my time in Bloomington. After graduating IU, I returned to Alexandria for a year, lived with some of my college fraternity brothers and did a number of things: car sales, political work, MBA classes at GWU and finally a few months as a campaign worker in Richmond. I left in '77 to attend law school at the Univ. of San Diego. Married in 1978 and we are still married. Graduated law school in 1980. Moved to La Jolla (part of SD) in 1986. Kids starting in 1987 (No 1. Son), 1989 (No. 2 Son) and 1993 (the Princess aka "World's Grumpiest Cheerleader"). Started my own law firm in 1993. My specialties are antitrust, consumer protection, investment fraud and human rights, mostly class actions and mostly representing the little guys/plaintiffs. My practice takes me all around the US. I've had some interesting cases against the likes of Charles Keating, Drexel/Milken, Microsoft and other major corps. I am most proud of a case I worked on against some majo...Expand for more
r Japanese companies for the veterans of the Bataan Death March in WWII who were shipped to Japan and forced into slave labor, mostly in the mines; in a real outrage the Bush State Department had the case killed on "foreign relations" grounds! I addition to my law practice, I teach antitrust law at the Univ. of San Diego. I make it back to the DC area every once in a while. Its amazing how much it has changed and yet not. On time coming out of Dulles down 66, I asked the driver where we were, as the area seemed unfamiliar. He told me we were in Tyson's Corner. I said no way, that's 5 miles up the road, I remember when the mall opened. (I remember when the Beltway, Dulles and the Kennedy Center opened, too.) Another time, about 2006-7, I had a very liquid dinner with the still beautiful Becca Cross who has a gallery in Georgetown in the same place as my mother did in the mid-70's (met Becca's husband and sons, too). Becca is a great artist/ceramicist and her husband is a very famous architectural photographer. She caught me up on a lot you. Any other old friends out there who would like to join in the Dan's-in- town-let's-have-many-drinks club, give me a hoot. Same if your travels bring you to San Diego. Looking back, growing up in the DC area in the 60's was simply not a typical childhood. They were strange days and everything was thick with politics and the counter-culture. Exciting but still strange, particularly since we were so young when it was coming down. Sometimes I feel like Zelig when I look back. I am glad that so many of you survived and thrived. I certainly regret a lot of my behavior so if there is anyone out there from my school days, who I should have been nicer to- and there are many of you - I apologize and assure you that I have been trying to make up for it for a long time. Peace, health and prosperity to you all. Drop a line sometime.
