Daniel's Story

Life Hello fellow CyHi Cents, SCMA alumnus and other friends! Can you believe it's been over 20 years now, soon going on 30 and even longer for those of us from SCMA?! Whew, I don't feel old enough to be attending a 20-something or 30 year high school reunion! I've stayed in the area since graduation, currently living in the city of La Mirada and married now for 21 years! She's not a Centurion, but I don't hold that against her. We have 2 wonderful children, Lil' Danny and Amanda. After graduation from SCMA, in '77 I initially enrolled at Bishop Amat, but was only there for 1 semester. I made good friends there, but sadly lost contact with most of them. I then enrolled at CyHi and graduated with a scholarship from the MeCha Club. I attended Rio Hondo College in Whittier and worked several odd jobs to get thru college, Wallpapers To Go, in the Puente Hills Mall, being the most fun job during that time. In 1982 I graduated from the Rio Hondo Police Academy, Class #61 and received my AS degree in 1983. I worked as the Assistant Security Director, at the Los Cerritos Mall, where I met my wife. I left the mall, got married and joined the Army in 1984. I was stationed in Germany and worked in communications, where I engineered secure digital and analog communication networks for the 7th Army (computer/digital communications technology was just beginning back then, at least for the Army). I was honorably discharged, from the Army, as a Sergeant (E-5), in 1988. After the Army I worked as the Security Director for the Laguna Hills Mall until I was hired by the CSU Police at Cal State Fullerton in 1990. I left CSU Fullerton in 1996 to work for the MTA police, until they were taken over by LASO and LAPD. I chose not work for either of those agencies and was again hired by the CSU police, but this time at Cal State Dominguez Hills, where I currently work and am in charge of 911, police communications and records. I still keep in touch with most of my good friends from CyHi; Alden Gehrt, Joe Mendoza, Mike Olivas (Gadberry), Ed Brondo, Mark Cook and others. If you remember me, it'd be great hear from you and catch up. Hope to hear from you soon, Danny School SCMA - I had the biggest crush on Ms. Seabranch, later known as Mrs. Baker. Ms. Lee had the biggest academic impact on me. She made algebra sooo easy to understand and science very ...Expand for more
interesting. Having lost my Father when I was younger, Cpt/Maj Ward and CSM Presley were the men who I looked up to and who I strived to be like while growing up. There were others who I admired, but those people are the ones who I remember the most. Does anyone remember when Mrs. Williams'/Niswonger's 1976 8th grade class performed the "Wizard of Oz" for the school? I was lucky and got to play the "Wizard", but as fun as it was, I felt sorry for the guys who had to play "Dorothy", "The Wicked Witch of the East" and "Glenda, The Good Fairy of The North'! CyHi - I had a couple of crushes at CyHi. Kera Hunington was my 1st crush. I think she graduated with the class of '79. I drooled when she would wear her cheerleading outfit and to this day have a thing for those outfits! My now wonders why I beg her to wear a cheerleading outfit for Halloween, LOL! I remember building up the nerve to ask Kera to sign my yearbook on the last day of school, the year she graduated! Not only did I ask her to sign my yearbook, but found the nerve to tell her about my crush! She totally made my day when she hugged me and kissed me on the cheek! Woooo Hoooo...sounds like something outta the movies doesn't it? In my senior year, I had a secret crush on Diane Horton and Mary Gallo! Diane was in my English class with Mrs. Miller and I'd jump at the chance to work with her on an assignment! Think I messed up with her though...I asked her to go to the winter formal with me (joking around) and she said yes, but I didn't think she was serious about it and I never followed through with it. Later I heard from friends that she was really angry at me for not taking her and instead taking someone else. Mary Gallo was in my raquetball class and she looked absolutely gorgeous in her short, shorts! I never had problem asking her to play a game of raquetball with me, but never got the nerve to ask her out! ***hitting myself on the head, saying...stupid, stupid!*** LOL How about Mrs. Anderson?! She was my counselor and I've never had such a good time talking about, my class schedule and college. Not that I remember anything she said, but it was great being alone with her in her office! LOL I looked up to Mr. Chaldu (sp). All the girls were soooo crazy about him! And what a coincidence that he taught sex ed! (Hmmmmmm) I think every guy in school wanted to be Mr. Chaldu, LOL.
