Daniel's Story
Well its been a long time since grade school at St Al's in Greendale and Greenfield high but here goes. One of my first recollections of GHS was trying out for the freshman football team and quit because I didn't have the endurance for the grueling practice schedules I told the coach I was a fast sprinter in grade school and with a friend of mine were the fastest wide receivers on our football team.. I also remember being ridiculed because I didn't know the difference between the backfield and the line.so coach put me in a as a running back! Hated it and quit the team. Funny thing was in gym class one day when we were running track I ran the 50 yard dash in my stocking feet at 5.2 seconds - coach said I don't believe my stopwatch! run it again! - guess what? I ran the second heat in exactly 5.2 seconds, Coach said I should try out for track team and I said... (under my breath screw you asshole you missed out with me last year in football!) Just think I probably would have been GHS's all conference wide receiver all the way up to Varsity if the coach just put me in as a wide receiver!! yea me as a "G" boy? I shudder at the possibility - yeesh.
Anyway I was taken under John Reichert's wing early in my Sophomore year as his trumpet student. He was a trumpet player himself so it was an easy choice for him to take a special interest in bringing me up to speed with everything musical. I learned Jazz trumpet concert band, Jazz band and sight reading from him. I had a special interest in writing my own big band charts in high school too having 2 compositions played by the Esquires in their final year end concerts.
After high school I studied a year at the Wisconsin College Conservatory on Prospect Ave in Milwaukee but dropped out because I was going through withdrawals from substance abuse in high school. Many of you who knew me probably figured I kind of went overboard with my "recreational pursuits" yup sure did and cost me my first couple of college years.
So I wandered around ...Expand for more
looking for a job and ended up in a couple dirty foundry's then cleaning up at Gimbals downtown on the night shift, and then ended up working graveyard shift at Babcock and Wilcox - you may remember them as the company that built the tubing for 3 mile island? - no it wasn't my stuff that broke it came from the PA plant!
Didn't take long to realize this is no life for me and decided to join the Air Force .Figured even the service has to be better than that job. I tried to get in the band of the Midwest with my buddy Joe Atwater but the band director (another trumpet player) saw I had recently changed my embouchure and said to go back and practice another 6 months and re audition. Decided to change into a career more practical and went in the AF as an avionics technician and was lucky enough to land a gig at Luke AFB AZ working on F-15;s. Went through 4 years of AF and decided to go back to music school this time Berklee College of Music in Boston MA.
Moved out to the Boston metro area in Jan 1981 and never looked back.! Went to Berklee for 2 years before the money ran out, Was married to my wife Elaine in June 1984 then cleaned houses to stay alive and decided to move into the high-tech industry. Got my diploma at Sylvania Tech School now Wentworth Tech. .then started working for Eaton/Nova now Axcelis Technologies for 25 long years. Got laid off in 2014 and have now started my own internet based multi-media company. I'm looking forward now to my new career and wished I could have started earlier..
Boston can be a pain to live in but I settled in seacoast NH in 2000 and we are close to the Boston culture (only an hour away) but still feel like you live in the country. on my 15 acre property. My wife Elaine and I were DINKS (now happily retired) and looking forward to relaxing in our retirement years. Of course that will never happen with me because I've never been busier since I started up my home business!!!
