Daniel's Story

Workplace I resigned my teaching position at Tift County High School(Tifton, GA) of 18 years as the Automotive Service Technology instructor in October 2005. In December 2005 I accepted a program coordinator position with VC Tech(Pelham, Al) of the Industry Management program. This program is brand new with four instructors, and teaches students the fundamentals of management responsibilities in any automotive related business, as well as the skills needed to start, operate, and maintain a business of their own. VC Tech has two primary programs, Auto/Light Diesel, and Collision Repair Technology, and offers 5 specialty programs offered after successful completion of one of the primary programs. The 5 specialty programs are;Hot Rod/ Chassis motorcycle, Hot Rod Chassis Street Rod, Custom Paint/Graphics, Custom Upholstery, and Industry Management. IM is the only program that an Associates Degree in Business Mnagement may be earned. The school classes and activities look like what you see on TV like "Overhauling", "Pimp My Ride", "West Coast Choppers", "Orange County Choppers", "Hot Rods by Boyd Coddington", or the vehicle rebuild/fabrication show with Chip Foose. I also get to enjoy working on my vehicles and motorcycles as well. This place is too cool. I also enjoy the Birmingham area a lot more than the plain South Georgia surroundings. I hope to be here for a while! But wait, there's more! September 2007,VC Tech closed!! Bummer. Decided to move back to GA so my wife could complete her 30 year teachers retirement. November 2007, I accepted a position with Griffin Technical College to create a new Diesel Equipment Technology program to be housed at a brand new satellite campus near Jackson, GA. It is a ton of work starting from scratch, but it has its advantages having everything new. Carol, my wife got a job immediately teaching 1st grade. She has 2 years to retire! I go back to visit Birmingham a couple weekends amonth with a business partner working on British sports cars. Lots of fun. My wife decided to buy a Chrysler Sebring convertible after riding in my 197...Expand for more
4 Jensen-Healey roadster. I like the car being a fun sporty car built the year I graduated from TBT. My son joined the USMC in 2007, got married Feb 2008, deployed to Iraq, returned safely in October, and will be deploying again after the first of the year 2010. He will return in Sept.2010. Brad finished his USMC enlistment in Jan 2011. He and Kristen are going to move to Augusta, GA to pursue his medical degree and she will finish her English/Journalism degree at Augusta State. Our daughter, Lauren graduated from Spalding High School in 2010 and has enrolled in the Cosmetology program at Southern Crescent Tech College. Griffin Tech merged with Flint River tech to form Southern Crescent Tech. Carol, wife, retired this year after 32 years of teaching elementary school, Kindergarten and 1st grade primarily. I will be eligible to retire in the Georgia Teacher's Retirement system in four years. I hope to be employed at Barber's Vintage Motorsports Museum in Birmingham, AL as a senior restoration technician on the museum motorcycles and Lotus competition cars. Didn't happen, but I still enjoy volunteering as a docent and tour guide. We both retired from education in 2012 and moved back to Birmingham. We leased our new house to a nice couple and got an apartment in Alabama. I started working for a car club friend who owns a European luxury car repair and restoration shop. Carol is substitute teaching in the Homewood, Alabama system and loves it! This year I left Empire Autohaus and took a position as a tech in a custom car building shop and classic American vehicle restorations. I sold my Honda CX Turbo repair and parts business, and now I enjoy riding my 2010 Victory Vegas as my daily driver. So after a decade of building award winning custom vehicles and automotive restorations/resto-mods, I decided to enjoy retirement beginning July 1, 2022. Now I spend my time working in the yard, riding motorcycles with friends, church mission trips, various car shows/events, volunteering at auto related museums, and traveling the country visiting interesting places. Life is good!
