Danny's Story
The biggest thing in my life is still knowing, loving and serving God as best that I can and able. Many folks at SBEC prayed for me to "get saved" and I "got saved good". My life hasn't been the same.
I worked odd jobs out of high school becoming very active in the ministries of Broadway Baptist while the rest of you were smart enough to go and finish college. I got some great jobs in Commercial Art (my "dream job") even though I didn't have any formal education. I was hired on the strength of my portfolio which included that ole 1977 yearbook. I spent nearly two years at WPTY-TV Channel 24 as the Art Director which I loved.
I left to begin my trek to my sense of calling to the ministry, but got side tracked for a few years eventually driving an 18-wheeler cross country for about a year. Enjoyed it immensely with tons of "trucker stories" to tell of what I got to see all over the USA. Before I knew it ... I was 30 years old and nothing to show for it.
I moved to Wilmington, NC with an old roommate that was called to be Youth Pastor at a church there. He came back from his interview and asked me to move with him cause he didn't know anyone there. He then told me that there were "beaches and women" there. I said "Let's go!" I transferred with my company to Wilmington, then about three months after moving the company went bankrupt leaving me stuck there. I was always able to hustle a job, so I got a job working in Commercial Art again on contract basis.
After getting settled, God broke me in regard to my walk with Him and I rededicated my life. Shortly after that, I met my future wife Lisa Brady. We were married about a year and a half later. The roommate was married the week before to a girl he met there too. It was a late start, but a great start. I don't want to brag here, but I do humbly believe with all sincerity and absolute conviction that I have the best marriage on the planet. I was 32 years old.

en from 8 to 15 (three boys: 1st, 2nd & 4th; and one girl: 3rd). I went to Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC to get my Associate of Divinity in 1992 and finished up with my B.A. in Theology from the The Baptist College of Florida in 1997. It took me 20 years to get my 4 year degree, but I got it. We spent a total of 10 years in vocational ministry either part-time, full-time, or bi-vocationally as a Minister of Families or as a Children's Pastor in North Carolina, Alabama, Florida and Texas.
Our young family desperately needed some settlement. I did not want to offer my children on the alter of "the ministry". I had seen too many colleagues loose both wife and children to the pressures of vocational ministry. We came back to an area of North Carolina that we endeared ourselves to and that was very kind to us when we served for 2 1/2 years between degrees not knowing what would happen.
I substitute taught to supplement our income and found that I liked it. We cut our income in half to do it, but we are twice as happy with me teaching full time. I just finished my 7th year of teaching Technology and Career (and two years teaching Yearbook) in a middle school. I have more opportunities to witness to a broader audience than ever before.
We are happy raising our children in a distinctive Christian home. We home school our kids which keeps Lisa busy. We love living way out in the sticks in our big ole double-wide on our five acres. God has and continues to bless us. Lisa and I teach a four year old Sunday School class and I serve as Chairman of the Trustees at our church.
Nothing has happened the way that I planned or thought that it would be ... but man, what a ride. I have no regrets in where I have been or gone, who I have loved and who I have hurt or my fears and failures. I love the country music song by Rascal Flatt about "... all the broken roads that lead me straight to you." This is a perfect picture of how Lisa and I met as well as how I came to know the Lord Jesus Christ.
