Darcy's Story

Life I am married and live in the Milwaukee area, about 40 miles north of the city of Milwaukee and approximately 90 minutes north of Chicago. I am employed as a Nurse Practitioner and work in the field of Urology. I have earned my doctorate, so I am Dr. Darcy now. I have been in the medical field for nearly 40 years, a decision I made after a life altering experience. My background prior to becoming a Nurse Practitioner, was working primarily as an inpatient medical-surgical nurse in the areas of Urology, Gynecology and Gynecological cancers at the Medical College of Wisconsin (Froedtert Hospital, Milwaukee). I have two daughters, the oldest is Amy (born in 1972) who has a post-graduate education in paralegal law, through Hamline University in St. Paul. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Justice and Public Policy prior to enrolling at Hamline(proud mom). My youngest daughter, Courtney (born 1983),is a registered nurse, having graduated from the College of Saint Catherine in St. Paul. She has travelled to Europe on three occasion singing with the college's women's choir. My nuclear family still resides in the Minneapolis area (no one left in Coon Rapids)! My father died in April 2010 after a long battle with Alzheimer's dementia. My mother, Mrs. Jenkins, from the high school office (attendance secretary), yes, now you know if you didn't already, she was my mother! It was like living with a CIA agent in your house. "Your not going out with him, do you know what his older brother did?" YES,it was tough, as all dates basically had background checks already done! Mom now resides in New Brighton, MN in a senior's apartment complex. I TRY to get home couple of times a year, but whenever back in the cities, I never seem to see anyone familiar from our huge graduating class??? "Where did you all go?" I traveled to India in March 2007, through through my alma mater university, to work at and assess a rural northern mission hospital and to teach students at their nursing school and mission hospital. I also crossed the Pakistan border for one VERY long day, not a feat worth repeating I assure you! I am 56 years old currently. My husband John, is 7 years older than myself, and was involved in professional automobile racing most of his younger adult life, mostly on the European continent (Formula One). He completed his degree in photography from the University of Wurzburg, Germany while living there over a decade. While there, he worked for two auto racing publications much like our "Road and Track" and "Car and Driver" magazines (LeAction & Sport Auto). He also was a pro...Expand for more
fessional racing technical inspector and was involved with the CART Series, now IRL (soon to be another league??) and also the professional racing series of the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America). When he returned to the U.S. in the late 70's-early 80's) he was employed by Elkhart Lake's Road America, professional road racing course. He is also a trained Firefighter, and became heads of both Road America's race team testing days and also of the fire rescue cadre (so this is why I relocated to Wisconsin). Moving on, something that I have never discussed openly, but feel that it is time now...I was involved in an accident in November of 1981, which fractured my sacrum (large bone across the small of your back), and seriously damaged all of my lumbar vertebrae (L4-5 through S1). I was left paralyzed from the waist down due to these fractures and also due spinal cord concussion and impingment. I was hospitalized for MANY months. I subsequently underwent surgery #1, plus extensive physical therapy and was eventually able to begin walking again. I eventually regained the use of my legs (yeah)! I have the greatest respect for physical therapists, they don't take "no" for an answer! I underwent surgery # 2 in October of 1987 and then the final surgery # 3 in June 1992. I am functioning fairly well now. I have a ton of metal in me and feel at times like the "bionic woman!" Prior to first meeting my husband, I was divorced several years already, as my health set backs had taken a serious toll on my prior marriage. I met my husband at a Pro-Series race at Brainerd Int'l Raceway in July of 1988. I was working the medical unit as a SCCA member (weekend hobby), and he came in with a laceration that needed care. We married in 1990 and so I left Minnesota, so my husband could stay at Road America, and to be near his elderly ailing widowed father. Eventually he had to get out of racing in order to care for his father who eventually passed away. Together, we had many wonderful years in professional automobile racing (quit in late 90's). We had wonderful friends, such as: Mario and Michael Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi, Rick Mears, A.J. Foyt, Paul Tracy, Danny Sullivan, Eddie Cheevers, Roberto Guerro...the list goes on. Will still get Christmas cards from many of these wonderful folks. My husband does work from our country home, as well as miscellaneous photography work. We have a male cat, Angus "Gus" (British Black shorthair) and our third golden retriever, this time a female, named Magdeline "Maggie" Mae. So, I am alive, upright, and working way too hard.
