Darla's Story
Life
I've been living in beautiful Brookings, Oregon for the last 22 years. We love it here! We have the ocean, the Chetco River, camping, swimming, hiking, hunting, etc! We have 5 busy children age 27 down to 18, 3 boys and 2 girls in that order. Our oldest Thomas completed his Culinary Arts degree as an apprentice chef at the Grand Hyatt in Seattle. He is now managing a Starbucks. Jon completed one year at Southwestern in Criminal Justice, he was on their track team. As a senior he injured his ankle and it ended wrestling for him, but he has really excelled at track qualifying for state junior/senior year and the NWACCS as a freshman in college. Jon was active duty in the NAVY, he was in Bahrain for 2 yrs. as Master at Arms (Navy Police), Mobile Security Squadron Three. Now a Petty Officer Third Class/MA-3, he was stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for a year, and King's Bay, GA for a year. He is now active reserves and back in college finishing his degree. Tim's senior year was full of injuries, a knee injury ended his football season and a major elbow injury ended his wrestling season before state, he completed one term at Southwestern in business, then transferred to College of the Redwoods where he played football. Tim was a real estate broker and working with investors and developers in Santa Rosa for a time, then attended Northwest Lineman College in Oroville, graduated and is now working for PG&E in Bakersfield, CA. He married the beautiful Brennan in June of 2009 they are very happy! Kelli was on the cheer team (brought back Loggerettes memories!), she has a very successful career with Umpqua Bank and lives in Portland. Heidi just graduated in '11 was also on the cheer team and an elite jazz choir. She is attending community college here in Brookings and just got accepted to Western Oregon University for next fall. She is a singer and songwriter, plays piano and guitar. My husband Ken Moore and I have been married almost 40 years. He is still in construction. I am very involved in disability rights and advocate for children in special education. I worked for 2 yrs as a Personal A...Expand for more
gent for a program that serves adults with developmental disabilities, but found it incredibly frustrating to actually GET what people need. I was offered a job as office administrator for our local Re/Max Coast and Country in 2006, worked for 5 years in that position now I stay home! I'm on several boards and committees for kids here which keeps me very busy! Ken built our home on 5 acres up the river and 3 miles up Gardner Ridge. We're about 2,000 ft. up here and have a fantastic view of the mountains and the river. We have a zoo here at our place. We have two Portuguese Water Dogs who are extremely spoiled and take a lot of my time. If you're ever passing by, give us a call. Come see why we never leave! Sorry for the novel, but I love reading other's profiles ;o)
Workplace
I started working at House of Fabrics at the Eureka Mall in 1970. Left in '76, worked at Daly's from '78-89 in Eureka, in the Brookings store '92-closing of the chain. In '95 I started volunteering for a respite company, working for $$$ for about a year until the program closed. I was a substitute instructional aide at our local school district for 3 years and still do advocacy work for parents and children with disabilities. I attend eligibility and IEP meetings, attend trainings and meetings in Salem and Portland with state level policymakers. I loved my work, but the pay was lousy! I then spent two years as a personal agent for a program which serves adults with disabilities, but the paperwork frustrated me tremendously, so I moved out of that job. I helped open an interior design store, Nextera Interiors, within Main Street Design Center. We opened in March of 06, it was incredibly exciting! Two years ago I was offered a job as office administrator with Re/Max Coast and Country and I absolutely love it...and am now becoming a realtor at this late stage in my life. I cannot believe I am doing this. Ken has retired from sheet metal and is now doing finish work for a local contractor who really appreciates him and pays him well. Someday when we are done educating the children we will be able to really retire!
