Darlene's Story
Life in 2013 (Autumn)
Since I left Amherst in the early 60's I was back and forth many times until I met and married Jim Fleury from Oshawa, Ont. in 1965. Since that I was back in 1968 and again in 2013 At the time I lived in Oshawa, Ontario and my husband Jim and I had 2 beautiful baby boys Fabian and Ian. Jim had lived in the Yukon when he was a kid and we decided we would like to take the boys and move there. So in 1969 we moved to Whitehorse in the Yukon where we lived until the early 80's. We then moved to Spruce Grove in Alberta in 1981 and in 1983 my husband Jim passed away from an Anuerism. My oldest boy graduated from High School there also in 1983. After my youngest finished school in 1985 I decided I wasn't meant to live alone in a big house so I sold my house in Spruce Grove and bought a smaller one in Edmonton, Alberta closer to work. However Edmonton was too far from the sea so I rented out my house there and moved to Stewart, BC where lots of my Yukon friends had moved. I guess I had to spread my wings so I bought a 40' yacht and started a charter fishing business. After 3 severe winters there I took my boat south to Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island where I sold the boat and got a great job there running a Marine Pub. rrent husband there. He was my Molson Beer Rep at the pub so when he retired from Molson in 98 we ran a Golf Course on Van. Island then decided to buy a Restaurant in the Okanagan. We stayed there for 3 years and decided although it had it's moments, it was pretty hard work so we sort of retired. The only problem is there was too much time on Bob's hands and he found us another job. We them moved yet again to White Rock, BC and ran a Seniors Independent Living Residence for another 3 years. (seems to be a pattern here) Then fo r the next 3 years we Managed Inns for the Sandman Hotel chain and this brings us up to 2006. We decided to fully retire and we bought a home on Shuswap Lake in BC. We also bought a Park Model Trailer and spent our winters at a resort in Mesa Arizona in the wonderful warm sun and Bob and I loving Baseball took in many a Ball game (spring Training). In 2013 (spring) we sold the Park Model and are spending the winters in BC now. It isn't so bad and we love the seasons and retirement. If it gets too much we can always fly out to Mexico or where ever it is warm. It seems I have always worked and have looked forward to this for most of my working life. We have a puppy, Shitzu, and he is usually our constant companion, he wouldn't have it any other way.
