Darrel's Story
Well I started out with everyone in the first grade, 1959. Zionsville was a great place to grow up! Best friends I ever had. Unfortunately, after the 9th grade in 1968 my mom, sister and I moved to Fort Bragg in Northern California. This is where my mom grew up.
I finished high school there. Interestingly, in Fort Bragg HS Biology was a sophomore class subject. In Zionsville we took it in the 9th grade. So I was the only sophomore in the Chemistry class with the juniors and the only junior taking Physics with the seniors. They thought I must be really smart.
After graduation I came back to Zionsville and lived with my dad for a year. I was there all of 1972 but didn’t run into many of you in town. Dad always wanted to get back to Southern California, where he hung out during his army days and met my mom. So we drove out to CA at the end of 1972 and I’ve been here since that time.
My dad moved back to Indianapolis when he retired in 1987 ...Expand for more
and I used to visit him every year. I’d spend a week in May so we could go to the ‘500. And I always made a trip to Zionsville to see who I might run into. Dad passed away in 1993 so I stopped coming back to Indy for a while. I started visiting again and going to the race in the 2000’s, just for nostalgia. It was nice to have a little reunion at Nancy Thayer’s house back in 2014. I got to see a couple of friends I grew up with, like Johnny Johnson and Tom Hardin.
I’ve cut back on traveling these days, but if a class of 1971 reunion were to happen I might try to crash it. I didn’t get to graduate with you, but I spent most of my youth growing and learning with you. It’s always nice to visit childhood friends.
And I might even have a couple more Indy 500’s to attend. If so I’ll be sure to stop in Zionsville and see who’s around.
