Darrell's Story
Life
Since graduating from JFK and leaving Guam in 1976, I have had a varied career. First came a stab at the United States Air Force Academy, where I finally won an appointment in 1978. After only a year as a cadet, however, I was dismissed due to academics! Time in the Air Force both preceded and followed my Academy sojourn, with my being discharged in 1981. Later that year, I began school at Colorado State University, graduating in 1984 with a B.A. in Political Science. I then taught English in Japan for a year as a Mombusho English Fellow. at an alternative school in Denver. In 1986, I began graduate work at the University of Kansas, where I would remain for the next 12 years. During that period, I spent two years in Tokyo studying Japanese at Sophia University. After earning a Master's degree in East Asian Languages and Cultures and completing all but my dissertation for a doctorate in East Asian History, I left Kansas in 2000 for my current position at Seattle Pacific University, where I teach East Asian and World history. Here, I (finally) completed my Ph.D. program in 2004. Now, I am appreciating the opportunity to live in a beautiful location while engaging in a calling I immensely enjoy.
